Definition and Examples of Work

  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns or traffic accident scenes as assigned.
  • Assist motorists by providing basic mechanical assistance and/or wrecker service vehicle response.
  • Provide fuel, water, other fluids, change tires, and other minor mechanical assistance as required.
  • Maintain and replenish supplies that can be provided to customers including, but not limited to: bottled water, blankets, first aid supplies, etc.
  • Provide stranded motorists transportation to a place of safety.
  • Assist KHP personnel with traffic control at accident scenes if needed.
  • Document and notify IMC of abandoned vehicles.
  • Provide assistance to motorists at traffic scenes.
  • Provide information and directions to motorists.
  • Give maps out as needed.
  • Remove disabled vehicles from traffic lane with push bumpers when needed.
  • Remove all objects from the roadway that constitute a hazard.
  • Administer first aid as required until Trooper or Emergency Medical Personnel arrive.
  • Report to Dispatch any unusual occurrences, criminal activity, traffic problems, or hitchhikers.
  • Complete reports and paperwork of services rendered, as required.
  • Complete scheduling for part-time technicians during the summer season.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

Latitude and Impact of Position

This position works independently and as part of a team, including providing input and problem solving with others to complete tasks. The position provides coaching and training in an informal manner. Negotiation, persuasion and diplomacy are used with both internal and external customers. Decision making is typically done in conjunction with others and independently in regard to decisions affecting the individual, department and organizational work tasks. Successful completion of job tasks impacts operating costs, customer satisfaction, external company image and liability.

  • Work is primarily done within a vehicle and along the highway, next to high speed interstate traffic. Works occasionally in the office.
  • Exposure to all weather elements including, but not limited to:
    • High heat
    • Cold
    • High humidity
    • Dust exposure
    • Loud noise
    • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles
  • Occasionally exposed to various chemicals.
  • Personal protective equipment may be required.

QUALIFICATION

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of Kansas Turnpike rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Knowledge of police radio communications regulations and rules.
  • Be able to work and maintain composure in a fast-paced and high stress environment.
  • Be able to speak clearly, listen accurately, and write legibly.
  • Voice and hearing acceptable for radio monitoring/transmitting.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle while using defensive driving skills.
  • Ability to use hand tools and automotive tools, such as jacks and air compressors.
  • Ability to use computer, phone and related peripherals.
  • Ability to set up traffic control signs and equipment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Basic auto mechanical experience (recommended)
  • Experience with hazardous materials recognition and blood borne pathogens recommended.
  • Accident/crime scene experience (recommended)

Required Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent and 18 years or above.
  • Defensive driving course.

Certification, License, Registration

  • Driver license with good driving record.
  • First Aid/CPR and AED certified (required)

  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull weights up to 50 pounds (frequently)
  • Occasionally required to lift, carry, push or pull up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to hear the customer and dispatch calls, including assessing their tone/demeanor (continuous)
  • Must be able to see up close to be able to visualize a computer screen (continuous)
  • Must be able to see at a distance and identify and distinguish colors and/or shapes (continuous)
  • Ability to adjust focus and use peripheral vision and depth perception (continuous)
  • Ability to distinguish sound tones (continuous)

Other Requirements

  • Daily travel
  • Weekly overtime as traffic and weather dictate.
  • Frequent shift work.
  • Rare call out.
  • May work on holidays.
