_ Section I: Summary of the Position_:

South Whitehall Township, which is a Township of the First Class located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Summer Laborer.

Reporting to the Public Works Group Leader, the Summer Laborer will perform duties of construction and maintenance of Public Works projects that serve South Whitehall Township such as streets, playgrounds, and parks. Hours are 6am to 2:30pm.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt/Hourly position in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Section II: Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform routine ground maintenance at municipal buildings, parks, and recreational areas.
• Cut brush, mow grass and weeds, plant and prune shrubs and trees, remove refuse and trash.
• Use a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, hand tools, and electronic or manual gauges in conjunction with the varied construction and maintenance project.
• Maintain parks and recreational areas for special events as required.
• Routine driving and/or labor that would satisfy the assigned task.
• Survey condition of roads, informing Public Works Supervisor of poor conditions or problems.
• Perform general maintenance and cleaning tasks in garage. Store tools in proper location. Keep the work area clean and orderly.
• Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.

• Comprehensive knowledge of modern principles, practices, equipment, and materials used to perform the requirements of the particular job title functions.
• Demonstrate exceptional public relations skills and interaction with co-workers, members of the public, and vendors.
• Knowledge of light and medium duty equipment operating procedures.
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for equipment and tools.
• Operation of manual, pneumatic and power tools.
• Ability to perform manual tasks or operate equipment for extended periods of time in possible adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
• Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards.
• Ability to cooperate with co-workers on group tasks.
• Ability to demonstrate polite and courteous manners towards the public.

Section IV:Education and Experience:

• 16 years of age or older.
• Prior related experience is preferred.

This position will require the employee to perform strenuous work seldom, for extended periods of time.

The work area will encompass a wide variety of settings including: work outside, in poor weather conditions, in hazardous traffic areas, in and around structures that may be hazardous and/or unstable, and under unfavorable or unsanitary conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may reach extremes where hearing protection is required.
