PPIC’s Digital Marketing and Outreach Internship provides an opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in policy communications to help expand the reach and impact of PPIC’s research on key trends shaping California’s future.

Project Summary
The Digital Marketing and Outreach intern will collaborate with PPIC’s communications team and other staff to help develop new strategies and tactics for building the institute’s audience and increasing engagement. The intern’s work will cut across a range of digital tools, which may include social media, email, website, video, data interactives, podcasts, and others, depending on the intern’s skills and interest and organizational needs.
Responsibilities
In the coming year, PPIC’s research team will produce new analyses on the key economic, political, social, and environmental trends that are driving change in California. This emerging body of work is an opportunity for PPIC to explore innovative ways to reach and retain our core audiences as well as to engage new audiences.
The Digital Marketing and Outreach intern will work closely with members of PPIC’s communications team to build greater understanding of the institute’s existing reach and engagement and to explore new Digital Marketing and Outreach approaches. Central goals of this project are to use digital tools to expand the diversity of our audiences across age, race, ethnicity, and region and to ensure that our work contributes to better public policy that improves well-being across all regions and communities in California.
Key Qualifications and Attributes
The ideal candidate is creative and curious, with a collaborative and solutions-oriented mindset. This person should have:
- Interest in investigating the evolving roles of email, social media, video, interactives, podcasts, artificial intelligence, and other tools within a nonpartisan, nonprofit, policy-oriented context.
- Ability to generate collaborative solutions and strategies for improving outreach to broad and diverse policy audiences.
- Experience with at least one facet of Digital Marketing, such as social media, email, website, video, content marketing, podcasts, or others.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Interest in public policy and a commitment to presenting facts and information in a nonideological, nonpartisan manner.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will have working proficiency in two or more of the following:
- Social media management tools (Sprout, Hootsuite, Buffer, e.g.)
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website analytics
- WordPress or other major website content management systems
- Standard design software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, e.g.)
- Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools (Salesforce, HubSpot, e.g.)
- Email marketing software and processes

The Work Environment
Interns have the opportunity to participate in the collegial atmosphere of PPIC through daily interaction with all aspects of the institution. They are invited to join the communications staff in their regular meetings and to attend PPIC’s public events, including the institute’s Speaker Series programs and research briefings.
The intern’s work will involve close collaboration with the communications group and other team members. In addition, the intern will receive constructive evaluation and feedback both during and at the end of the internship. Interns are encouraged to discuss their work throughout the course of the project, to meet with communications staff to discuss outreach and building an audience with policymakers, and to meet with research staff to discuss key findings from new analyses and possibilities for digital presentation and Outreach. At the end of the internship, the intern will give a short briefing on projects completed and key lessons from their work.
Location, Compensation, and Time on Project
The 2024 intern program will be conducted remotely or via a hybrid setup if circumstances allow. Compensation is $23 per hour. This full-time internship will last up to eleven weeks, ideally beginning June 10, 2024.
