Intern, Communications, Scientific Impact
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer-fueled organization whose mission is to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and improve the quality of life for the children and adults affected by these diseases. Our work is dramatically accelerating the research process through our varied research initiatives; we also provide extensive educational and support resources for patients and their families, medical professionals, and the public. Position Summary:
The Foundation has an exciting opportunity available for an intern to support the Research Impact team to communicate the impact of the IBD Plexus program, a revolutionary platform that redefines how the IBD research community studies IBD and advances game-changing therapies and discoveries. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in a career in science communications.
The intern will report into the Manager, Scientific Impact and work closely with the IBD Plexus team. S/he will be responsible for creating and posting content related to research findings of the IBD Plexus program on various social media platforms. This will include putting together social media posts when academic or pharmaceutical companies publish papers using IBD Plexus data and biosamples. The intern will also be responsible for reaching out to researchers to tell their story of how working with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation helped further their scientific work. These stories will be published (e.g. as a blog on our website) along with a lay version of the paper.
The Summer Internship is a hybrid work model: 3 days/week in the New York City office and 2 days/week Remote, paying $20/hour.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Proactively seek out research stories and bring the science to life in ways that are relevant to the Foundation and to IBD patients
- Interview scientists to describe their experiences and benefits of working with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation IBD Plexus program
- Translate IBD Plexus research findings into a lay language summary through blog posts and/or other communication pieces e.g., social media post, infographic, etc.
- Post developed content on the Foundation's social media platforms
- Monitor social media analytics and adjust social media strategy accordingly
- Develop a process of identifying Plexus-related publications and collection/development of impact narratives
Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be pro-active, self-directed, detail-oriented and organized
- Comfortable digesting primary scientific literature
- Past experience in writing about science for a nonscientific audience
- Ability to interact professionally with multiple and diverse cross-functional stakeholders e.g., Foundation staff, researchers, etc.
- Ability to prioritize, work under pressure and meet deadlines (with supervision).
- Experience with social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram
- Familiarity with social media analytics tools and an ability to use them to optimize content
- A background in biology or health-related field is preferred
