DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties involving the planning, coordination, operation and support of the Summer Day Camp Program ensuring its effective and cohesive function on a daily basis.
This is a part-time, seasonal position that typically works early April to early August. Position works 25-28 hours/week during this time period.
SUPERVISION
  • Reports to the Recreation Program Supervisor of the assigned program.
  • In the absence of the Recreation Program Supervisor, may exercise supervision over part-time staff of the assigned program.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following functions & duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address City needs and changing business practices.
Provides training, program orientation and communicates expectations to staff; monitors staff to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; ensures staff maintain a healthy and safe work environment; coordinates work assignments of part-time staff.
Oversee Summer Day Camp Program participants; calmly and effectively handle emergency situations.
Develop, schedule and coordinate summer camp activities, including off-site field trips, and provide this information in requested format(s) to parents/guardians, staff and the public.
Create fun, safe, and educational experiences for children kindergarten to 6th grade enrolled in the program by developing, planning and implementing interactive activities, such as games and projects.
Actively participate during camp programs and help children prepare for group activities such as swimming, climbing, hiking, etc.
Assist the Recreation Program Supervisor in actively coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing, and correcting behavior of part-time staff and/or program participants, including assisting with difficult situations.
Provide administrative support to the Recreation Program Supervisor by maintaining participant registrations form, attendance sheets and other records, marketing activities, inventory & procurement of approved program supplies and equipment, and compiling basic program data as requested.
Maintain a positive working relationship with school district staff.
Maintain and monitor the security and condition, including cleanliness, of all program locations.
Communicate professionally and effectively with parents, staff and Recreation Program Supervisor; greets and welcomes staff, parents, and program participants each day; remain visible and accessible to staff, program participants and parents.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:
  • Basic education and practical training in sports, fitness, games, and recreational activities for children.
  • Basic principles and practices of planning and implementing recreation programs.
  • Basic principles of training and leading staff.
  • Basic mathematical principals and concepts.
  • Principles and techniques used in dealing with the public. Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Interpersonal communication techniques including understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, cooperation, concern, and politeness to others and relates well to different people from varied backgrounds and different situations.

Skill to:
  • Work enthusiastically with groups of children.
  • Prioritize and assign tasks.
  • Operate in a courteous, knowledgeable and tactful manner with customers, staff and the general public.

Ability to:
  • Lead and organize part-time staff.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate concisely and effectively through a variety of methods, such as email, written reports, and verbally.
  • Identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Handle stressful situations in a professional manner, including angry and difficult individuals.
  • Exercise good judgment in facilitating confidential matters.
  • Operate a personal computer and required software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of experience in child care or youth camp programing and planning. Experience in Parks & Recreation and/or leisure services field are highly desirable.

Age Requirement:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Education/Training:
  • An Associate's Degree, or equivalent to 45 semester credit hours, from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.

License/Certification:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of First Aid and CPR Certificates within 30 days of start date.
  • Completion of Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of start date.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to work in a variety of environments including indoor and outdoor settings, including the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 50 lbs.; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
