Description and Terms of Employment
Monona Parks & Recreation offers Summer Camps for kids in grades K-5. Counselors-in-training (CITs) assist camp instructors and counselors in any or all areas of camper care and instruction. The CIT position also provides leadership growth opportunities through planning, goal setting, and generating enthusiasm for camp activities. CITs will receive First Aid & CPR certification training through the American Red Cross. All CIT applicants should be interested in working with children and possess maturity, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and the ability to have fun.
This position requires the ability to work 10-15 hours a week; shifts are scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-5pm.
Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assists in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers ages 6-11.
2. Acts as a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior: sets a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices. This includes, but is not limited to, the schedule, care for others' desires and preferences, and sportsmanship.
3. Sets a personal and camp goal at the beginning of the week and regularly checks in with leadership counselor throughout the week. At the end of the week, the counselor coordinator will lead a review session.
4. Participates in the development and implementation of program activities.
5. Leads and assists with the teaching of activities.
6. Enthusiastically participates in any assigned areas.
7. Maintains high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
8. Assures that campers are properly supervised at all times.
9. Is aware of and implements safety guidelines.
10. Helps campers resolve conflicts.
11. Helps instructor and/ or counselor take attendance and distributes and collects nametags.
12. Befriends campers and helps them build peer friendships.
13. Helps with snack breaks - and with clean up.
14. Attends meetings with senior leadership (weekly).
15. Maintains clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff and participants.
16. Participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to campers and counselors.
17. Participates as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise all-camp activities and camp functions.
18. Performs other duties as they arise, including attending field trips.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 14 years old at the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States.
• Must have a desire to work with and inspire children in a Summer Camp environment.
• Must be certified in First Aid and CPR at a minimum. These certifications may be obtained onsite during staff training.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Ability to perform physical aspects of the position, including working long hours in an active camp program.
• Ability to possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
• Ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
• Knowledge of or ability to learn to use a variety of equipment including sports, crafts, and waterfront equipment; office supplies and electronic equipment including a phone, iPad, computer; digital camera; and other equipment as the need arises.
