Job description

Harvard-Westlake Summer seeks a Summer Film Teacher and Director to lead our very popular short film program for grades 7-10. Consisting of four separate courses, the goal of this program is to create a set of student-written, produced, and directed short films. The number of films produced depends upon enrollment. Typically, two to four films are completed. The courses in the program are:

  1. Writing the Short Film: two weeks, June 17 - June 28, 9:00 - 3:00
  2. Summer Film, the Basics: one week, June 24 - June 28, 9:00 - 3:00
  3. Making the Short Film: two weeks, July 1 - July 12
  4. Postproduction: Putting the Final Touches on your Film: one week, July 15 - July 19, 9:00 - 3:00

The director will be responsible for teaching all classes except Writing the Short Film. TAs and assistant teachers can be hired to support these classes as well. The director will supervise the writing course to ensure the scripts are able to be produced in the remaining classes.
Harvard-Westlake Summer offers an enriching academic and art program that allows students to explore new topics without the pressures of a traditional academic environment. No grades are given, and work for the course is usually completed within the class meetings.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience creating, shooting, and editing films
  • Ability to use Adobe software
  • Ability to work with middle school-age students
  • Ability to create a fun, productive classroom environment that allows students to learn new concepts within a summer enrichment setting
