The Suicide Prevention Trainer works in various locations at Swords to Plowshares including the San Francisco Drop-In Center, the Oakland Drop-in Center and all the Housing sites providing guidance, training, and coordination of efforts to prevent suicide among veterans in a manner that exemplifies Swords to Plowshares philosophy, mission, and vision through direct veteran care. The Suicide Prevention Trainer will also routinely engage with outside organizations, provide trainings and resources to meet veterans’ medical health, mental health, and human service needs in an effort to prevent suicide. The Suicide Prevention Trainer will also participate in community activities and events related to suicide awareness and create local partnerships with other veteran serving agencies, collaboratives, and military installations as appropriate.
Essential Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
~Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable embracing the agency’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative and the principles of Cultural Humility.
- Conduct trainings in accordance with the agencies approved SSG Gordon Parker Fox Suicide Prevention Grant as required by the Veterans Administration. This will include training staff on the tools and measurements required by the funder for enrollment into the grant.
- Ensure that training services are provided across the agency and with external partners to meet the grant objectives and requirements.
- Work in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Coordinator to ensure compliance with the grant objectives.
- Providing Suicide Prevention and postvention training(s) to key stakeholders (e.g., education; substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery providers; family members; justice; military) as they address suicide deaths and suicidal behaviors.
- Developing and implementing upstream approaches to mental health promotion and Suicide Prevention utilizing a community care-based approach.
- Working with other community-level prevention organizers to promote collaboration and best practices in Suicide Prevention.
- Demonstrates effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ensures Suicide Prevention curriculum is current and provides updates as needed.
- Demonstrates independent judgement in assessing training needs of community and clinical service provider users and create training plans and conduct training to meet those needs.
- Develops trainings and ensure they are promoted in a timely manner to maximize participation by stakeholders and internal staff.
- Coordinate trainings with Human Resources team to limit overlap with other scheduled trainings.
- Complete and document trainings with service providers and other stakeholders in the community.
- Conduct program outreach within the military community.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements include
- Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health field and two years’ experience working in administration or management of Suicide Prevention activities and/or community programming.
- Working experience in the Suicide Prevention field.
- Has experience providing trainings to small, medium, and large groups to include impacted communities.
- Has knowledge of public health principles relevant to Suicide Prevention, intervention, and postvention efforts.
- Although this position will not work directly with clients, an understanding of clinical services for Suicide Prevention is integral to the skill set we are seeking.
- Working with Veterans is desired but not required.
- Understanding of working with marginalized communities, people with disabling conditions, and persons experiencing homelessness.
- Ability to create and monitor progress towards grant deliverables.
- Timely documentation.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to follow through with tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a team.
Equipment and Software used PC, Microsoft Word, Outlook for e-mail and calendar, SharePoint, web-based case management software.
