Substitute Teaching
SUBSTITUTES provide face-to-face instruction with students in school buildings and ensure continuity of appropriate learning during the absence of the teacher. Substitute Teachers perform related duties in lieu of the absent teacher, or in a class that does not have an assigned teacher. This position is on-call and is assigned based on operational needs.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Reports in person to the school building to provide face-to-face instruction to students
- Responsive to changing school and district instructional needs
- Provides classroom instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans left by the classroom teacher or provided by the school
- Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
- Maintains a safe and orderly environment
- Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned by following the directions provided
- Maintains a professional appearance and follows the guidelines outlined in the substitute handbook
- Remains at school the entire school day, unless otherwise instructed to leave by the building principal
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility
- Communicates effectively with parents as needed
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated
- Monitors students in the classroom, at lunch, and throughout the school by maintaining order and discipline
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal
Newton County Schools (NCSS) will be accepting Substitute Teachers for the 2023-2024 School Year from July through April. To be added to the substitute roster, you MUST either:
1. be a certified State of Georgia Educator who already holds a current teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or
2. be eligible for a State of Georgia Educator teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, or
3. hold a Substitute Teacher certificate of completion from the Griffin RESA Substitute Training Workshop
If you meet the criteria above, you are NOT required to attend Substitute Training; however, you MUST complete the following steps:
- Complete online application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher Training” job posting
- Provide “Substitute Required Documents”
- Report to Human Resources Department and pick up Substitute Payroll Packet
- Return ALL completed paperwork to the Human Resources Department between 8:30AM and 4:30PM Monday through Thursday
- Complete fingerprinting and background check (bring two forms of ID)
- Acceptable forms of ID include a current Driver’s license OR passport, PLUS one of the following: a birth certificate OR a social security card
Note: If you have a teaching certificate and are not under contract, contact the Human Resources Department to inquire about long-term substitute teaching vacancies and eligibility.
If none of the above applies to you, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Complete online application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher” job posting
- Provide “Substitute Required Documents”
- Register and successfully complete substitute training workshop (NCSS or Griffin RESA)
- Submit a copy of the certificate of completion (Griffin RESA)
- Report to the Human Resources Department and pick up Substitute Payroll Packet
- Return ALL completed paperwork to the Human Resources Department between 8:30AM and 4:30PM Monday through Thursday
- Complete fingerprinting and background check (bring two forms of ID)
- Acceptable forms of ID include a current Driver’s license OR passport, PLUS one of the following: a birth certificate OR a social security card
- Schedule ½ day - full day School Observation and have principal sign Observation Form (form in packet)
- Return School Observation Form to Human Resources
