STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education's mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe's need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.
Responsibilities:
The incumbent of this position serves as a Substitute Teacher in the absence of a certified teacher on an intermittent basis. The instructional areas will normally be general elementary subjects. The Substitute Teacher provides education instruction in a classroom setting utilizing practical teaching methods and techniques to a designated group of students.
• Conducts classes in accordance with prescribed course outlines pre-developed lesson plans, and supervisory direction.
• Performs instructional services for assigned classes performing normal range of instructional functions pertaining to organization of daily work plans, conducting classes, and assisting students in performance of planned activities.
• Maintains records pertaining to attendance, test results, subject matter covered, and other items for use by regular teacher.
• When substituting during prolonged absence, works in conjunction with the supervisor to develop lesson plans and daily work plans utilizing prescribed course outlines, standardized texts, or other pre-developed course materials.
• Within established guidelines, maintains control of assigned class.
• Supervises assigned students scheduled or provides for their supervision throughout the academic day and/or activity in order to provide for the safety, health, and welfare of the students.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED and (3) years of experience.
SUBSTITUTION: 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework may be substituted for (2) years of experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Must obtain and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Good vision and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters.
• Ability to hear the conversational voice, with/without a hearing aid.

Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Education.
