Position Summary

The Study Abroad Advisor in the International Business Program is responsible for working with the IB Director on all aspects of Study Abroad and foreign partner outreach. The position also is responsible for ongoing support for the other Student Service Professionals and assures University policies are met in all areas of student experiences abroad. The position involves some traveling during a given academic year and/or in summer. 

In addition, the Study Abroad Advisor will work collaboratively with the Global Education Office team to support IB majors on planning and logistics of completing their Study Abroad requirement. 

This position maintains clear and consistent communication with all IB Exchange partners and external program partners regarding enrollment, program updates, risk management, promotion opportunities, and scholarships.  Additionally, the Study Abroad Advisor supports program review, risk management and incident response as needed.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. 

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.  The position involves some traveling during a given academic year and/or in summer. 

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The International Business Program is an interdisciplinary program combining business, foreign languages and cultural knowledge. Housed in the College of Arts and Letters, International Business is one of the college's largest majors and one of the largest majors at SDSU. 

The program currently has approximately 500 students and is the only nationally ranked undergraduate program in the CSU and currently ranks 17th in the nation. The staff consists of a Program Director, an Internship and Career Advisor (SSP III), an Academic Advisor (SSP III), an Administrative Support Coordinator I, and this position, Study Abroad Advisor

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related. 

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional Student Services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex Student Services problems. 

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a jobrelated field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Key Qualifications

  • Study abroad advising experience or similar relevant international work experience.
  • Experience evaluating international transcripts or working with different international education systems.
  • Experience advising on highly complex and sensitive student matters.
  • Possession of thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior and general knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of the Student Services field.
  • Ability to participate in some traveling during a given academic year and/or in summer.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,732 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,732 - $8,176 per month.
