Duties
Park guides connect people to parks. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experiences, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park Guides help visitors explore the many dimensions of the park by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources.
National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning and inspiration. The work done by a Park Guide through effective interpretation and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.
The positions serve as front-line representatives of the National Park Service by meeting and greeting the visiting public. Duties require use of audio/visual equipment, interpretive equipment, computers, and park vehicles. Much of the work is done outside in hot, humid conditions, or in caves. Biting insects are common.IN ADDITION to the above duties:
At the GS-3 level: Incumbents conduct limited and pre-established talks, including introductions to historic structures and static exhibit interpretation. The positions operate visitor contact stations at Van Buren, Round Spring and Alley Spring, provide visitors with park and local information, directions, and respond to inquiries. Incumbents assist with park special events and roving.
At the GS-4 level: From prescribed research and documents, incumbents conduct talks, walks, tours, evening amphitheater programs, and children's programs for the public relating to park themes. The positions operate visitor contact stations at Van Buren, Round Spring and Alley Spring, and provide visitors with park and local information, directions, and respond to inquiries. Incumbents assist with park special events and roving interpretation.
Positions will be filled at either the GS-3 or the GS-4 level, depending upon your qualifications and park funding availability. Positions may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions have no known promotion potential. You may be considered for the GS-03, GS-04 or both by indicating the lowest grade you are willing to accept. Promotion from the GS-03 level to the GS-04 level without further competition does not apply to temporary positions. Positions are also available at two duty station locations. You must indicate which locations you wish to be considered for.
