Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Transforming Outcomes Project at Sacramento State (TOPSS), the Student Support Coordinator (Coordinator) helps support students through all aspects of the TOPSS program from application, financial aid, registration, academic and career advising, and degree completion of the program. In addition, they support the TOPSS Director in aspects of program administration as assigned. The person in this position uses generally accepted advising skills to support individual students, administer to program processes, and to develop new approaches to meet specific program needs.
 
The Coordinator will interact and collaborate with academic departments and colleges in the development of academic programs appropriate for the TOPSS program. They also collaborate with related programs across campus, including Academic Advising, Bursar, Financial Aid, Registrar, Admissions, Project Rebound, and other areas as appropriate.
 
The Coordinator collaborates with TOPSS external partners, particularly the CDCR, specifically at Mule Creek and Folsom State Prisons, and with the California Community Colleges, especially Los Rios. Regular travel to Mule Creek and Folsom Prisons to work with TOPPS students and partners is essential to the position.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,025 per month - $5,200.00 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 per month -$7,159 per month

Department Information 

Transforming Outcomes Project at Sacramento State (TOPSS) is a four-year degree completion program administered and delivered inside two California state prisons through a partnership of California State University, Sacramento and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. TOPSS is a program of Sacramento State's Division of Academic Affairs under the auspices of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:
 
The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification.
 
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
 
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
 
Experience:
 
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
 
A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
 
Education:
 
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Qualifications 

Experience
1. Demonstrated success working in an advisory capacity with undergraduate students in post-secondary institutions.
2. Demonstrated success working with diverse populations defined by race, ethnicity, social class, and age.
3. Equivalent to three years of experience in professional student or academic services.
4. Success in academic advising demonstrated by academic degree completion or equivalent experience.
5. Demonstrated success in collaborating with faculty and staff.
6. Demonstrated success in cross-divisional collaboration.
General Knowledge /Skills/Abilities:
7. Working knowledge of the academic practices, procedures, and activities of undergraduate programs, including knowledge of organizing students' programs and events.
8. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
9. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
10. Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
11. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU Administrators and staff, students, private and public agencies, others in committee and student advising, and community contacts.
12. Demonstrated ability to make decisions independently using sound judgment and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program and service areas.
13. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with external partners.
14. Demonstrated ability to work independently on assigned tasks without direct supervision.
15. Demonstrated ability to use MS Office Suite.
16. Demonstrated history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations.
17. Thorough knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation with excellent written and oral communication skills.
18. Ability to regularly travel to Folsom and Mule Creek Prisons and off site meetings
19. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community
 
Conditions of Employment
- Ability to successfully pass a background check.
- Ability to pass California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation background check to secure regular access to prisons to advise TOPSS students.

Preferred Qualifications 

20. Earned graduate degree in appropriate field.
21. Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and interpret varied information and data, statistical or narrative form.
22. Demonstrated ability to develop and apply flexibility, resourcefulness, and creative approaches to unique problems with an understanding of the full academic and university-wide contexts.
23. Experience working with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and/or California Community Colleges (CCC).
24. Experience working with Canvas, and with student records relating to admissions, financial aid, registration, and progress to degree.
25. Demonstrated mastery of MS Office Suite.
26. Fluency in a language other than English.
