Position Description:
The University of Louisville School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a team member for the Student Success Specialist IV position. The grant funded position offers academic support for medical students in the MD program under the direction of the Education Learning Specialist and the SOM Office of Medical Student Affairs. The primary goals of this role are twofold:
  • Identify, document, assess and create an effective plan to meet the academic needs of medical students, focusing mainly on students with an interest in primary care specialization, including tracking effectiveness of interventions over time.
  • Support the Student Success Team's learning strategies and plan in large cohort groups via targeted programming to improve study and learning skills specifically for the didactic curriculum learning.

This position reports to the Education Learning Specialist in the Office of Medical Student Affairs. The assistant learning specialist will work closely and collaboratively with members of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Student Affairs (SA) Offices, including the Business Intelligence Analyst to effectively report data as it relates to successful academic support and intervention for medical students who have interest and focus on primary care specialization. Strong interpersonal skills, project management skills, and ability to learn new systems that directly support the goals of the position are a must.
This position is primarily focused on improving students with interest or on track towards primary care academic outcomes either through direct intervention or successful collaboration with the Education Learning Specialist. Resources outside this position are available for students through referral from this position if additional needs are identified through assessment of academic distress to better support students' emotional, mental health, personal, and professional development needs. Administrative and IT support for specific required job functions is available.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate on academic support for primary care track and interest specialization.
    • Collaborate on academic success programs for class cohorts of primary care specialization and other Pathway program students that enhance learner success and develop independent adult learners.
    • In conjunction with the Business Intelligence Analyst, develop a strategy to help track academic support and interventions for students with interest in primary care. Serve as a key partner in designing and implementing programs designed to enhance academic performance for students with primary care interest groups.
  • Consult with students in need and in follow-up to assess effectiveness of interventions. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Administering and interpreting learning assessment tools or other psycho-educational tools to aid in identifying academic support needs.
    • Providing individual confidential diagnostic evaluation of study practices and structured interventions, to increase learning effectiveness and productiveness.
    • Creating a "prescription" for improved learning and study habits, which may include and overlap with the executive functioning necessary to succeed in medical school.
    • Referring students with emotional, mental or physical health, social, professional, financial, or other needs to the appropriate support personnel within the University.
  • Work on programs to support students with interest in primary care with academic needs, individually and in small groups, to provide advanced learning and study strategies, knowledge organization, individual study plans, high-stakes exam preparation, test taking skills, remediation preparation, time management skills, and other effectively learning support.
  • In collaboration with Business Intelligence Analyst, collect, organize, and longitudinally evaluate data from current academic systems on primary care student performance, matriculation metrics, and other measures to identify and provide anticipatory support to academically at-risk students.
  • Well-versed in confidential advising notes in compliance with university and school policies, as well as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Collaborate with Director/Manager, and other targeted staff in counseling and guiding primary care students in academic difficulty.
  • Collaborate with Director/Manager, Business Intelligence Analyst, faculty, and staff on research projects focusing on improving the education of our students and their academic outcomes.
  • Provide assistance to students with disabilities to navigate the accommodations process.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior professional experience as academic/learning skills specialist at an undergraduate or graduate school is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with racial, cultural, and ethnic minority/underrepresented populations.

Competencies
  • Demonstrated skills and experience providing learning strategies to advanced students.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and educational levels for academic success.
  • Knowledge of educational theory and experience in higher education with a focus on advising and support in the areas of adult learning, remediation, time management, knowledge organization, test-taking skills and study skills.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and faculty in a rigorous academic setting.
  • Ability to adapt well in an ever-changing higher education environment.
  • Strong organizational management skills, including the ability to learn new systems that are necessary to the role (learning management systems, other IT systems).
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues and maintain collegial relationships.
  • Ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
  • Ability to perform duties independently once trained, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
