POSITION TITLE: Student Services Academic Advisor

DEPARTMENT: Student Affairs

REPORTS TO: Dean of Student Affairs

CLASSIFICATION: Non Exempt

ESTABLISHED: 2-1-11

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and coordinating academic and career advisement. This person in this position will provide ongoing assessment of student skills and aptitudes for careers and provide assistance in maintaining academic progress for completion of coursework for degree programs.

ACCOUNTABILTY:

This position reports to Dean of Student Affairs. This person must be accessible and accountable in the Student Affairs office for both students and public during the times established as directed by Dean of Student Affairs. Regular office hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm are expected to be maintained.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists students with course registration/provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the students interests, values, abilities, and degree programs.

Assesses the student's stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.

Advises students on academic, career and personal issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.

Identifies options for student to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and amendments to student's program of study; assists students in completion.

Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance.

Maintains student files and records; documents all pertinent student information; update changes to student contact information.

Maintains and updates programs “trees” within the Jenzabar system, to facilitate student progress tracking and meeting of degree requirements.

Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of orientations and presents academic information to new students and parents during orientation.

Provide assistance for students who wish to transfer to a 4-year university.

Checks various forms for accuracy such as grade checks, overload petitions, curriculum changes; assists students in their completion.

Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to student's program of study.

Evaluates transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.

Assists students with admission and registration/provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, values and abilities.

Provide students with information on career options based on assessment of skills and aptitudes.

Develop and conduct information seminars and workshops.

Assist in college events such as Orientation, Graduation, and the annual LLTC Pow Wow.

Support the development, implementation and evaluation of all Student Service activities.

Maintain student files, databases, and counseling schedules.

Resolves or assists in the resolution of problems and/or complaints and initiates corrective action as appropriate.

Serves on various college committees and participates in professional organizations as appropriate to assignment.

Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / REQUIREMENTS:

v Knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of LLTC.

v Knowledge and understanding of Anishinaabe history and culture.

v Experience working with Native communities.

v Previous experience working in a College setting preferred.

v Knowledge and experience in academic advising.

v Demonstrated commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities.

v Knowledge of current issues in Student Affairs, including recruitment and retention.

v Willingness to initiate and carry out complex tasks with minimum supervision;

v Knowledge of technology used in educational programs and service.

v Knowledge of Financial Aid, Admissions, and Registration issues.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

v Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

v Ability to work well with a diverse student body, coworkers and the community.

v Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

v Ability to work effectively with Tribal College staff, students, and the staff of other colleges, universities, and organizations;

v Ability to work effectively as a team member of LLTC;

v Ability to provide outstanding quality customer service and support to the LLTC and all stakeholders.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or related field and one year of academic advising experience. Experience working with Native youth preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Minnesota driver's license and current auto insurance.

Job Type: Full-time
