Job description

Health Promotion offers multiple Peer Educator positions.  Applying and qualifying for multiple positions will increase the likelihood of hours worked per week.  You can serve as one or more of the following Peer Educators:  General Health Promotion, Alcohol and Other Drug Education or Safer Sex Education.

General Health Promotion: Peer Educators share the mission of OU Health Services and also promote healthy lifestyles in several ways.  Peer Educators table Health Huts in the OMU and South Oval during Fall and Spring semesters. In this fun and important role, you interact with the student body by sharing information, prizes, and giveaways, with topics ranging from fitness and nutrition to healthy sleep and virus prevention. In the fall semester, peer educators' primary focus is presenting to First-Year Learning classes about OU Health Services and how to access medical care on campus. They also are given the opportunity to represent OU Health Services at programs in residence halls, at campus events, and with campus organizations throughout the year. Peer Educators are often called upon to assist with large-scale events like drive-thru clinics or vaccination events. This is an excellent way to gain experience with indirect patient care.

Alcohol and Other Drug Education: Peer Educators facilitate Fall Camp Crimson-based mandatory education sessions for First-Year students which take place on a single day the week before the start of the semester in groups of approximately 75 students. Our target audience during Camp Crimson is comprised of residence hall students, commuter students and transfer students. The remainder of the year's Alcohol and Other Drug Education sessions will comprise Greek Life, Student Organizations, and other niche groups. This is an excellent way to connect with peers and positively impact their time at OU. You can also receive training in Generation Rx, which is a Safe Medication Practice curriculum overseen by Health Promotion and facilitated for any interested student organization or group.

"Sexperts": are safer sex peer educators and facilitate a one-hour presentation for residence halls, classrooms and student organizations.  The presentation covers safer sex practices and STI and pregnancy prevention facts in a game-show style format.  With rising STI rates among college students, you will play a critical role in the wellness of the OU community.  Fall and Spring hours are on an as-needed basis.

As a Peer Educator, you will also receive weekly feedback/support/mentoring from Health Promotion Staff.

Interviews will be conducted during the late Spring 2024 and early Summer 2024. You will be contacted for an appointment if chosen for an interview. Hired students must attend a mandatory training session during the first or second week of August (dates TBD). You must provide us with your availability during that week in the questions section of this application.   A federal law, known as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. 1232g), also known as the Buckley Amendment, requires that you must give your consent for anyone to see your academic records.  Since the administrators need to review your academic records to verify your eligibility as a bona fide applicant for a peer educator position, your signature and other information will be requested by the CAP staff to allow the administrators to review your academic records.  If you are selected, your application and supporting documentation become part of the public record.
