STUDENT ASSISTANT EMPLOYEE JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direct supervision of the Acting Equity and Diversity Initiatives Coordinator, the Student Events Assistant - Equity & Diversity Initiatives is responsible for researching justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (J.E.D.I.) practices to implement inclusive programming for student growth and development. The Student Events Assistant - Equity & Diversity Initiatives will work collaboratively with historically underrepresented students, cultural student organizations, campus departments and other institutions to support the research of anti-racism practices, programs, and speakers.
JOB DUTIES:
• Assists in planning, promoting, and executing University Student Union (USU) Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) events, which may include lectures, workshops, and meet & greets
• Plans, implements, and evaluates J.E.D.I. trainings, workshops, and programs sponsored at the USU
• Solicits quotes from and negotiates with vendors for event-related services and rentals
• Prepares contracts according to USU policies and procedures
• Develops and tracks specific event budgets
• Coordinates shopping and pick-up of supplies from various stores and locations
• Coordinates event marketing plans with the USU Marketing Department
• Coordinates room reservations, layouts, and other event needs with the USU Reservations and Event Services department
• Assists with conducting research on J.E.D.I trainings and best practices at higher education institutions
• Conducts research, including surveys, evaluations and assessments
• Writes or assists in writing a variety of general correspondence and reports
• Develops and/or supports partnerships and professional working relationships with USU staff, student volunteers, university departments, faculty, and clubs and organizations
• Serves as a note taker at meetings and disseminate information to committees
• Develops PowerPoint presentations and other educational materials in support of special projects
• Provides clerical and administrative support including simple to complex typing, filing, faxing, data entry, photocopying, scanning documents, and updating mailing/electronic ListServ as needed
• Complete other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Must be a currently enrolled CSUN student
EXPERIENCE
Previous related experience and/or specialized education preferred
Demonstrated experience working with historically underrepresented communities preferred
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver's License and auto insurance

• Excellent customer service skills required
• Ability to understand and articulate issues of multiculturalism, cross cultural communication, racism, sexism, heterosexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, religious oppression and other forms of oppression affecting students
• Ability to work under time restraints and meet deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group settings
• Understanding of collaborative approaches, including working with faculty, staff, students and community members.
• Effectively use computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
• Plan and coordinate events
• Develop and maintain effective systems of organization
• Effectively communicate thoughts and ideas in writing using standard principles of composition, as well as accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar
• Administer and follow verbal and written instructions
• Work independently without close supervision
• Work with and advise others in a team environment
• Must be detailed oriented, self-motivated, and possess strong initiative
• Ability to think outside the box when creating programs
• Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment
• Ability to problem solve

SUPERVISION:
This position reports to the Acting Equity and Diversity Initiatives Coordinator
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. Work is occasionally performed outdoors, in different climactic conditions. Daily contact with members of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and guests, is required. In addition to regularly assigned work schedule Monday-Friday, must possess an ability and willingness to work some weekends and evenings, academic interim, and break periods as needed; must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment.
