HOME of VA seeks a social justice and racial equity focused, self-motivated individual with excellent writing and time management skills to serve as its full-time Story and Grant Writer. We’re looking for someone who naturally gets people talking and sharing stories, communicates effectively, and writes compelling content.
Job Summary
The Story and Grant Writer will help tell HOME’s story to increase our network of supporters, donors, and partners. This is a unique role, as the position will report to and support the Development Director with grant and development writing, while also working with the Director of Communications on crafting HOME’s external communications.
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to HOME’s mission, solid writing and editing skills, an eye for details, excellent ability to manage one’s own time and prioritize tasks, and capacity to engage others to collect stories.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Understand HOME’s mission, vision, and values, as well as programmatic goals, activities, and financial needs to meaningfully convey them to our network of supporters and partners.
- Connect and collaborate with internal and external partners to coordinate, gather, produce, and distribute stories to advance social justice and create transformational change.
- Tell our story:
- Assemble and write stories about HOME’s work and its impact for clients and the larger community;
- Gather and distribute stories about fair housing and stories that express the need for equal access to housing;
- Draft emails, newsletters, and social media posts;
- Collaborate in the development of HOME’s exhibits, reports, and other media for public education.
- Grant writing:
- Draft letters of intent, proposals, and reports for foundations and private grants;
- Collaborate with HOME’s finance and program staff to assemble budget and support documentation;
- Manage correspondence and schedule meetings with foundations;
- Use the donor database (eTapestry) to enter and track private foundation grant awards and communications.
- General Fundraising and Communications:
- Draft solicitation/appeal and thank you letters,
- Support outreach and fundraising events.
- Help manage a communications and editorial calendar for general public education, building the base of supporters, and engaging existing supporters.
- Respond to opportunities to advance HOME’s mission and perform other duties as assigned and prioritized by the Development and Communications Directors.

- Ability to engage with peers in a collaborative working style.
- Capacity to learn and utilize a fundraising database.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and calendars.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse people of varying abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, both independently and as a team member.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend events.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and diplomacy.
- The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Commitment to treating colleagues, partners, clients, and stakeholders with respect.
Preferred:
- Experience with grant research and writing.
- Previous work experience with non-profit or governmental organizations.
- Comfort and experience using editing software (image, audio and video, post production).
- Knowledge of and experience using fundraising databases.

Anticipated hiring salary range: $50,000 – $58,000 (Salary will be commensurate with experience).
