GENERAL SUMMARY STATEMENT

Responsible for overseeing the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). Must maintain a consistent high standard of Sterile Processing practice, and assure that the department will meet or exceed regulatory requirements and be maintained in a cost-effective manner.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative

  • Supervises the Sterilization Processing staff.
  • Conducts all activities relating to the hiring, orienting and assessment of newly hired Central Supply staff.
  • Observes and maintains records of staff competency at least yearly and conducts all probationary and annual appraisals in a timely manner per hospital policy.
  • Organizes and coordinates the daily services of the departments. Sets appropriate priorities, uses time effectively.
  • Recommends, implements and enforces departmental policies and procedures that guide and support the provisions of services.
  • Demonstrates financial accountability. Provides input on cost savings and productivity enhancements.
  • Communicates regularly with staff on progress toward defined goals/required results. Is open to suggestions and new ideas from staff. Provides specific feedback, coaching and corrective action when necessary.
  • Exemplifies superior customer service skills and performs service recovery when appropriate.
  • Fosters teamwork among staff. Engage employees in the decision-making process when appropriate and values diversity.
  • Demonstrates a collaborative and supportive alignment with the Clinical Manager, Associate Director and Department Director toward unit goals and initiatives.

Clinical Practice

  • Supervises, and assures that the standards of operation of the department are in compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies such as the state Department of Health, The Joint Commission, AAMI and others.
  • Reviews and makes appropriate recommendations in reference to all new instrumentation and /or equipment needed the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Establishes and maintains a good professional rapport with staff, nurses, doctors and other applicable departments.
  • Conducts daily rounds in the OR, to handle any issues or concerns the OR personnel may have regarding surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Performs monthly quality control checks through SPM for all instrument trays used for surgery assembled according to the most current count sheet.
  • Provide monthly QA reports on, Tray Accuracy, Sterilization Biological Reports, and Missing Instrumentation/Incomplete Trays.
  • Knowledge of inventory control with relationship to par level.
  • Manages the instrument sharpening and repair. Sending out instruments that need repair, coordinating with the repair company on trays that need regular pms.
  • Coordinates with specialty nurse on loaner trays that are needed for procedures.
  • Maintains the SPM System (instrument tracking system) inputting new trays or changes to existing trays for OR, ER, Clinics, Cardiac, and Floor Specialty trays. Bar Codes and Count Sheets;
  • Maintains continued education in the field of Sterile Processing operations and equipment through education, literature and seminars. Provides instructions and in-service on new products, procedures and equipment in a manner that will ensure a high level of Sterile Processing practice.
  • Responsible for participating in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement and working with department managers to improve the services provided.
  • Must take corrective measures to overcome environmental conditions that are uncomfortable, unsafe or hazardardous.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree (Required) or a combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Experience in decontamination and sterilization of supplies, surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Prior experience as a supervisor or related role (Preferred)
