OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Recreation Programmer, the Start Smart Sports Instructor is accountable for the safe and enjoyable participation of all Start Smart Sports Development, Start Smart Baseball, and/or Start Smart Basketball participants. This person is responsible for instructing the program and leading the participants, following the Start Smart Coordinator Manual pertaining to sports development, the sport of baseball, and/or the sport of basketball.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Recreation Programmer
Works with participant parents on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, customers, and the general public.
Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Essential duties are not necessarily listed in priority order.
  1. Understands program content and fundamental sports skills, baseball skills, and basketball skills.
  2. Follows provided lesson plans while coaching children through skill stations and various games.
  3. Explains and demonstrates skills to parent/child groups.
  4. Sets up and cleans up drill stations.
  5. Provides praise to participants.
  6. Encourages and facilitates parent involvement.
  7. Creates a safe, fun, friendly environment.
  8. Maintains proper documentation of participant records and attendance, injuries, complaints and issues, and problem reports.
  9. Provides first aid and reacts appropriate in emergency situations.
  10. Prepares park and/or school for activity, ensures area is free of hazards, and cleans up area at conclusion of program.
  11. Reports any issues to Recreation Programmer.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Arrive at the designated site 30-45 minutes before program start time to make sure the area is prepared for play.
  2. Be a liaison between program participants and office.
  3. Responsible for program equipment.
  4. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum education and experience required to perform essential duties of the position.
Education, Certifications and Experience:
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Current Child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or willing/able to obtain.
  3. Experience playing various sports, such as baseball, soccer, and basketball, with teaching skills preferred.
  4. Previous experience working with and/or teaching youth in a sport setting (baseball, soccer, and basketball preferred) or other recreational programs desired.
Knowledge of:
  1. Knowledge of the rules and fundamentals of sports (especially baseball, soccer, and basketball).
Skill in:
  1. Playing various sports, especially baseball, soccer, and basketball.
  2. Coaching sports fundamentals (throwing, kicking, catching, etc.), coaching baseball fundamentals, and coaching basketball fundamentals.
Ability to:
  1. Follow City/Department/Division policies, work independently; react quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations, and make sound decisions.
  2. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers, and the general public.
  3. Possess good judgment; be dependable and able to lead a group of youth.
  4. Work evenings.
  5. Communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions.
  6. Work with minimal supervision and within the boundaries of responsibility.
  7. Always maintain a positive behavior and professional demeanor; address participant concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  8. Work effectively as part of a team.
  9. Interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  10. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to Recreation Programmer.

Supplemental Information
EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND MACHINES:
Equipment used includes bats, balls, and various other equipment to teach the basic fundamentals of sports, of the sport of baseball, and of the sport of basketball.
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  1. Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in program activities.
  2. Must transport self and equipment to site (must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.).
  3. Work may take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including possibility of high heat and humidity.
  4. Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
  5. Perform basic instruction to program activities, which may include, but not limited to: semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, and lying on stomach and/or back.
  6. Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time, up to 2 hours.
  7. See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
