CVEC is seeking a Staking Technician in our Palmyra VA office to: investigate, survey, and stake electric distribution lines in accordance with construction specifications; prepare work orders for construction, and obtain the necessary right-of-way permits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Designs new line extensions at minimum cost to cooperative and the customer.

  • Acts as initial contact for cooperative customers requesting new line extensions and coordinates communications between all parties involved.

  • Maintains electric service by investigating, surveying, and staking service & powerline upgrades and system improvements.

  • Assists Field Engineering Supervisor and Staking Supervisor by providing written information of job location and design for the building or upgrading of power lines.

  • Utilizes pen tablet, laser range finders, and staking software to stake and prepare staking sheets for the construction of new lines, line upgrades and line maintenance.

  • Ensures jobs are staked on time, with few errors, and according to the available specifications and safety standards.

  • Designs work orders and identifies design flaws.

  • Identifies and implements ways to improve staking and design practices.

  • Researches and acquires right-of-way permits and easements necessary for the construction of work orders.

  • Communicates with all parties involved through letters, emails, onsite visits and phone calls to obtain needed easements.

  • Provides additional input and contact as needed with construction crews to assure job proceeds smoothly.

  • Supports CVEC Mission and Core Values at all times. Adheres to bylaws, guidelines, policies/procedures and philosophies of CVEC to effectively serve and support members.

  • Assist with special projects as needed. Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Two to Three years of Customer Service experience.
  3. Two to Three years of Map Reading and/or surveying experience.
  4. Basic PC, Windows experience.

The Staking Technician I is the entry level position into this job group. A second level is achievable, as the employee becomes skilled at each aspect of the job and through additional experience on the job and completion of the 3 training levels of staking certification program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Ability to understand and apply mechanical concepts and principles to solve problems
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively in all mediums, with employees and the public.
  3. Ability to conduct duties in a professional manner.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Surveying and Staking Systems
  5. Excellent organizational and project management skills; manages time effectively
  6. Diligent attention to detail
  7. Excellent Mathematical skills including Basic Algebra and Geometry
  8. Takes personal responsibility for the successfully completing work in a timely manner
  9. Ability to create, read and interpret policy/procedure manuals, instructions, diagrams, maps, etc.
  10. Ability to promote collaboration and flexibility in working with others.

PREFERRED:

Associates Degree or equivalent, with course work in mathematics including algebra and geometry.

Salary Range: $25.00 -$31.00 per hour depending on experience (fully qualified and experienced Staking Techs may be eligible for more)
