Job Description
Primary Function of Position
Accessories often serve as the interface between other aspects of the da Vinci system and enable safe and effective robot-assisted surgery. They may be reusable or single-use medical devices (consumables). Our customers interact directly with accessories in every surgical procedure, and they serve a critical role in customer satisfaction and patient outcomes.
We are looking for a hands-on, technically strong mechanical engineer to sustain and improve existing accessories to meet the needs of our customers and our business, and to support development, testing, and documentation of new product designs.
The Staff Sustaining Product Engineer will support performance, cost, capacity and reliability improvements for Intuitive's surgical accessories, and complete the development, documentation, and verification of these improvements. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, have a passion for continuous improvement, and possess the ability to bring cross-functional teams together to solve problems. A strong sense of responsibility and project ownership is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.
Essential Job Duties
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of field and manufacturing issues, including identifying root causes of problems, and working in or leading cross-functional project teams to implement solutions that ensure the ongoing functionality and reliability of the product and meet customer and business needs
  • Support supplier change requests and variance requests, reviewing qualification plans to ensure conformance to product requirements
  • Research historical requirements and theory of operation to evaluate proposed product changes
  • Develop, implement, test and document solutions for product improvements according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings and documentation (e.g., Design History Files) in accordance with Design Control policies and regulatory requirements
  • Identify, develop, and implement design changes such as alternate materials, alternate part fabrication methods, and manufacturability improvements that reduce cost, increase operational efficiency, and improve strength of supply chain
  • Support CAPA investigations and quality/regulatory audits as required
  • Identify and implement best practices between teams and engineering departments
  • Mentor other engineers

Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
  • A passion for solving tough technical problems using fundamental principles, strong mechanical intuition, and persistence to pinpoint root cause of problems
  • Understand concepts of design input, design output, requirement traceability, and FMEA risk analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to design for reliability and manufacturability
  • Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, and strength of materials, including stress analysis, stress, fatigue, thermal, and reliability
  • Exposure to full product development lifecycle including ideation, design, analysis, debug, verification, qualification, transfer to manufacturing, and sustaining
  • Experience designing plastic components and assemblies
  • Knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including injection molding, extrusion, thermoset molding, machining, molding, pad printing, laser marking, laser welding, etc.)
  • Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks strongly preferred): designing parts with complex geometry, creating assemblies, creating detailed manufacturing drawings, and analyzing designs with Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Proficiency at failure analysis, including root cause analysis techniques (e.g., fishbone, 5 Whys, etc.)
  • Fluency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T and tolerance stack analysis
  • Comfortable operating machine shop, measurement and test equipment

Required Education and Training
  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering required, MSME preferred. Biomedical or other engineering discipline may be acceptable with appropriate mechanical experience.
  • Minimum 12 years of hardware product design experience with undergraduate degree; minimum 8 years with graduate degree. Must include prior medical device experience.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Excel in a fast paced, high transaction, mass-production environment
  • Utilize deep technical knowledge and broad expertise to achieve company objectives in creative and effective ways
  • Experience leading departmental and cross-functional projects and strategic initiatives from concept through completion
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple parallel projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations
  • Demonstrated excitement to learn and quickly analyze tough technical problems
  • Passion for creating robust, reliable products with a strong commitment to quality
  • Sense of shared responsibility and reward
