Job description

Join our team at the Nutrition Services Division (NSD), to provide healthy food to school children throughout the State of California!
The NSD administers state and federal food programs such as the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SPB) and orders, stores, and distributes U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foods and Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetables to recipient agencies. The Nutrition Programs Section (NPS) Staff Services Manager (SSM) III directly provides guidance and direction to the SSM ll who oversees the Nutrition Programs and Grants Administration (NPGA), the SSM l who supervises the Summer Nutrition Programs and Grants Unit (SNPGU), and an SSM l (Specialist) responsible for Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer coordination and administration and providing legislative support and policy development for the Director of the NSD. In addition, the SSM lll indirectly provides direction to two SSM ls in the NPGA and approximately 26 permanent and temporary staff.
Some duties include, but are not limited to:
Oversee the operations of the NPGA and the SNPGU so staff can productively navigate the SNPs administered by the NSD, including the NSLP, SBP, Special Milk Program, the State Meal Program, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and the Universal Meals Program. As one of the NSD's senior management team members, act for the Associate Director in their absence. Collaborate with advocacy groups and other state agencies in the development of outreach strategies to increase participation in nutrition programs.
Mentor and provide direction to one SSM II, three SSM ls, and one SSM l (Specialist). Supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of staff and, when appropriate, take or recommend action with respect to their work performance.
Direct the formulation and implementation of strategies to carry out policies, programs, and priorities of the Division, including monitoring and implementing strategic goals within assigned functional areas. Develop and implement policy and propose changes, including legislation, designed to improve the functional areas supervised.
Confer and coordinate with the NSD managers, the NSD Director, and the Deputy Superintendent to set and accomplish the goals and objectives of the NSD.

Working Conditions
This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule for eligible applicants residing in California. A hybrid telework schedule includes working remotely and physically reporting to the office.
Telework refers to all working days at approved alternate work location.
