Work Arrangement
Hybrid – This role requires the employee to be onsite an average of three days per week

The Role
As a valued Staff Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans. You will conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas in developing advanced mathematical modeling and optimization approaches and build real-time, decision support tools that enable GM’s plants to meet efficiency and quality goals. Staff researchers are expected to counsel GM engineering management on process improvements and provide leadership in GM programs and/or projects.

Importantly, also represent GM in research activities with academic collaborators and other external technical organizations. Consequently, it is necessary to write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results. You will be an integral member of GM’s Manufacturing Systems and Controls research team contributing to the development of novel algorithms, models, tools, and methods that can be implemented in current or future manufacturing plants. You also need to have a strong background and experience in Manufacturing Systems and process design, smart manufacturing, digital twins, statistics, quality management, control systems, and AI/ML.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop advanced math models & simulation techniques for GM's manufacturing processes such as in the area of Smart Manufacturing and building Digital Twins
  • Generate new concepts and ideas while conducting research programs that apply the latest AI/ML tools
  • Drive technical assignments in a resourceful and timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Work well with fellow researchers, centers, operational groups, plant personnel and universities.
  • Maintain state-of-art technical skills and knowledge
  • Develop working relationships with internal and external subject matter experts
  • Effectively communicate and detail results through internal and external publication
  • Collaborate with global technical teams and lead technical discussions as an expert in manufacturing AI/ML

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 3-5+ years relevant experience in the field of Manufacturing Systems and processes
  • Advanced degree from top-tier research institutions in science/engineering fields (electrical/mechanical/computer/industrial & systems engineering; applied mathematics/statistics/physics; operations research)
  • Background in manufacturing process modeling, design, control, and optimization
  • Manufacturing engineering theory and principles of production management & operations
  • Proven record of high impact publications in peer-reviewed conferences/journals
  • In-depth knowledge of scientific principles and pioneering research methodologies and tools related to:
  • Smart Manufacturing, Digital Twins, AI/ML, Big data, Modeling and optimization

What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • PhD in relevant field of study
  • 0-6 years of research experience beyond PhD. (university, research institution, or industrial research)
  • Extensive track record of successful manufacturing implemetations
  • Proficient in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization
  • Structured database design and integration experience along with programming skills (e.g. SQL, C++, Python, R, Matlab)
  • Familiarity with AI tools: Scikit Learn, Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch
  • Manufacturing engineering experience: general manufacturing processes, quality management, production planning, scheduling, shop floor control, lean manufacturing
  • Ability to collaborate with technical experts from suppliers, academia, gov't labs, etc.
  • Other: machine vision systems, process monitoring, sensing, and control, simulations, hardware/software for PLC and PC-based machine controls, and human-machine interface design for manufacturing applications
