JOB PURPOSE/REASON:
To assist General Counsel in providing legal services to the District and supervising staff for the Department of Legal Services.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
Law degree from an accredited law school;
Licensed to practice law in South Carolina;
8+ years practicing law;
Experience in K-12 education and knowledge of applicable federal and state statutes.
PRIMARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supports the strategic direction of CCSD and ensures that the Superintendent’s directives are executed;
2. Advises the Superintendent, Board of Trustees, and staff on legal matters with the assistance of General Counsel;
3. Attends regular Board meetings and other meetings as directed by the Superintendent;
4. Ensures compliance with laws, policies, regulations, codes, etc., with the assistance of General Counsel;
5. Coordinates compliance with the FOIA;
6. Maintains the CCSD policy manual and participates in developing District policies and regulations, ensuring that policies are current and accurate in form with the assistance of General Counsel. Serves as the CCSD representative on the Board Policy Liaison;
7. Prepares and renders legal opinions to the Superintendent, Board, and staff with the assistance of General Counsel;
8. Develops position statements on behalf of the District in response to EEOC complaints with the assistance of General Counsel;
9. Represents the administration in student disciplinary and personnel matters before the Board and constituent boards;
10. Conducts in-services and workshops on appropriate topics to keep district employees informed and educated in legal issues such as Sexual Harassment, EEOC, etc.;
11. Advises the school district on matters of insurance, contracts, and actions required to comply with the law with the assistance of General Counsel;
12. Handless 504 requests and accommodations for CCSD employees with the assistance of General Counsel;
13. Works cooperatively in negotiating contracts that affect the school district with the assistance of General Counsel;
14. Works cooperatively with the Office of Planning Partnerships and Communication to respond to telephone and letter inquiries from the public;
15. Works cooperatively with Human Resources on employee grievances with the assistance of General Counsel;
16. Works cooperatively with District administrators in addressing student adjudication with the assistance of General Counsel;
17. Provides leadership in the areas of risk management, worker's compensation, and administrative investigations;
18. Advises the administration on significant changes in the law; and
19. Performs all other duties as assigned by General Counsel and the Superintendent.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $111,609.00 - $166,521.00 per year
