The Attorney III will provide general legal support to the Department with a focus on agency privacy and security compliance and support for state Veteran Home enterprise. Specific job functions include but are not limited to the following:
Researches and maintains current knowledge of applicable federal and state privacy and security laws and industry standards, including HIPAA; serves as agency Privacy Officer; works closely with the Director of Veteran Homes and Information Technology staff to develop privacy and security policies and compliance standards; develops protocol for handling data breaches and handle legal aspects of compliance with laws regarding data breaches; assists with the development of agency information security and privacy awareness programs.

Provides legal support to designated divisions, including the Division of Veteran Homes. Manages or leads privileged internal audits, investigations and process reviews, and new policy and program creation and implementation.
Monitors legislation, regulations, case law, and government enforcement activities relating to substantive legal areas including privacy and security requirements, and provides proactive, strategic advice to the relevant stakeholders, and keeps legal management informed and solicits input on significant legal issues.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements:
A juris doctor degree from an accredited law school and experience as a practicing attorney. Active license to practice law in South Carolina. Experience with state and federal privacy and security laws.

- Position may require overnight travel.
- Position may require employee to work evenings, weekends and/or during emergency situations.
- Strong organizational skills.
