THE ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1999, CFUF strengthens urban communities by helping fathers and families achieve stability and economic success. As a pioneer in responsible fatherhood, family strengthening, and workforce development, CFUF’s programs seek to help clients fully exit poverty and sustain themselves and their families. CFUF serves Baltimore’s most marginalized residents. Our members (the term we use when referring to our clients) are 98% African-American, 60% male, 89% unemployed, 50% ex-offenders and homeless, and 30% without high school diplomas. Over 90% face one or multiple temporary or chronic personal, logistical, or human barriers.

ALL In is the Center for Urban Families’ comprehensive strategy to accelerate social and economic opportunity and advocate for policies that promote equity and racial justice. Leveraging 20 years of positive impact and applied learnings, the ALL In strategy targets two critical areas: chronic unemployment and family instability. The approach links individual accountability, person-centered case management, and supportive networks with workforce development training, education, and civic engagement. Staffing andGovernance

CFUF is governed by a diverse board of directors. The organization’s current budget is $6 million, with 78% allocated to program services. CFUF maintains a staff of approximately 40, and our leadership team is comprised of our Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Director of Programs, Director of Development, Director of Finance & Administration, and Director of Family Strengthening & Community Engagement.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant works in the finance and administration department of the Center for Urban Families. The candidate focuses on processes and internal controls, core accounting functions, budgeting, and financial reporting. This team member plays a key role in performing day-to-day accounting operations, including month end close and financial reporting for CFUF to ensure compliance to CFUF policies and procedures, timeliness, and fair presentation of financial data. In collaboration with other finance staff, s/he recommends improvements to processes to best incorporate suitable controls to ensure the integrity of the financial information, to ensure timely and complete accurate program reports, to ensure meaningful presentations of financial data to end-users, and to ensure timely response to requests for ad hoc financial information.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for assisting in the implementation of financial policies and procedures regarding general ledger, financial reporting, state and federal regulations compliance, and grantee compliance.
  • Responsible for adhering to financial internal control documentation established for the organization.
  • Ability to perform or review CFUF accounting/finance functions, to include financial statement preparation and analysis, reviewing and posting journal entries and journal vouchers, safeguarding and accounting for petty cash, cash receipts, accounts payable and receivable transactions, payroll, general ledger analysis, designated fund tracking, bank reconciliations, allocations, indirect cost rate calculations, budget development/analysis etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the Finance Team and other departments to ensure accurate and timely periodic Grant and Corporate Financial Reporting.
  • Maintain schedule of net assets with restrictions
  • Prepares invoices/billings based on contracts that CFUF has with the federal, state, or local government
  • Work collaboratively with CFUF Staff in the preparation of annual audit and Form 990 tax submission. (Including the preparation of schedules, review of support, responding to questions, and other supporting functions as needed)
  • Assist with the preparation and completion of the annual budget. Including calculating carryovers and reviewing assumptions in PowerPlan (budgeting software)
  • Prepare forecast monthly (Cash and for specified periods upon request)
  • Participate in Grant Implementation Meetings and Development Meetings to ensure compliance and reconciliation between Finance Records and Development Records.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly grant reports for stakeholders to communicate financial performance, monitor spending, and coordinate modifications to planned spending
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 3 years of Accounting Experience (Non-Profit Accounting Experience preferred)
  • CPA preferred
  • Highly detail oriented and organized
  • Ability to act and operate proactively and independently with minimal daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Must display ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • A strong dedication to providing superior customer service as it relates to both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus
  • Proficient knowledge of Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Word applications is required.
  • Highly flexible to changes in the work environment. Manages competing demands, priorities, or unexpected events well.
  • Confidentiality compliance must be maintained at all times.
  • Must be resourceful, resilient, and tenacious with a high level of personal integrity and passion for CFUF’s mission to accelerate social and economic opportunities, and advocate for policies that promote equity and racial justice.
