Description:

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a dedicated and experienced attorney to join the Health Occupations Prosecution and Litigation Division (HOPL) as a Senior Assistant Attorney General. This pivotal role involves leading the prosecution of licensing cases before the Maryland Board of Nursing and other health occupations licensing boards.
Responsibilities include prosecuting licensing cases by serving as the primary administrative prosecutor for disciplinary cases against health care professionals. These cases may involve allegations of fraud, abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults, positive criminal history record checks, drug diversion, unprofessional conduct, substance abuse, and standard of care violations. Drafting and filing charging documents, legal motions, and other necessary pleadings is required for this role. The AAG will represent the State in hearings before the Board or the Office of Administrative Hearings, presenting evidence and arguments to support disciplinary actions. This role also works directly with the Maryland Board of Nursing and other health occupation licensing boards' staff to coordinate case management, develop prosecution strategies, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong legal acumen, a passion for public service, and a commitment to upholding the standards of health care professions in Maryland. Additionally, the ideal candidate must be able to maintain meticulous records of all cases, ensuring timely and accurate documentation of proceedings and outcomes. This role contributes to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the HOPL Division. Finally, this role has supervisory responsibilities including providing guidance, mentorship, and supervision. Reviewing and assigning cases to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality legal representation is required.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years of legal experience, excellent research and writing skills, and experience with government law, administrative law, and litigation. Admission to the Maryland Bar is required. The ability to handle independently all phases of litigation including working with and presenting expert testimony is highly desirable. A background in health law or malpractice experience is helpful.
