Job Title: Staff Accountant - Full Time

Department: Finance

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

FLSA Classification: ?Exempt ?Non-exempt

Location: Newark Resource Center (NRC)


Job Summary

The Staff Accountant is primarily responsible for preparing and maintaining financial records to track the organization's assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. The Staff Accountant will also be cross-trained in other duties and responsibilities of the Finance Department to provide coverage and support.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, and document business transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Resolve any discrepancies or irregularities found in records, statements or documented transactions.
  • Prepare and make bank deposits of checks and cash receipts.
  • Record EFT transfers between GSCB bank accounts.
  • Prepare cash receipts journal entries in the accounting system, Abila, on a daily basis.
  • Obtain Accounts Payable check signatures from Board member(s) as needed.
  • Assist in the development of standardized independent contractors' processes and procedures related to their verification of liability insurance, setup for payments and tax forms.
  • Comply with accounting and finance internal control policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development of standardized interdepartmental grant processes and procedures related to financial components of grants.
  • Act as a backup for all Finance Department Staff.
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger, asset, and liability accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Review and verify all monthly benefit insurance invoices for accuracy. Prepare and enter allocations into accounting system.
  • Assist in the the monthly and yearly close and adhere to the accounting close schedules, timelines and deadlines.
  • Assist in the budget preparation and review process as needed and directed by the CFO.
  • Assist with the year-end audit and Form 990 preparation as needed and directed by the CFO.
  • Assist in the annual preparation of Forms 1099 and 1096.
  • Assist with special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Council management.

Position Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of accounting experience required, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Receipts experience.
  • Associate degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent experience required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of relevant nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong critical thinking skills and ability to plan and prioritize while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to deliver service excellence.
  • Demonstrated effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively (verbal, written, in-person, virtual and/or telephone) with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and facilitate projects to their completion.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making, while demonstrating a strong ability to work as a team.
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.

  • Possess a valid Driver's License and have regular access to a reliable vehicle.

Physical Demands: Must be able to work both in an office setting and independently and capable of lifting 25 pounds.
