Primary Function of Position
Imagine working on code that can change how surgeons learn about robotic surgery and how hospitals provide standardized trainings with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Join a team that works every day to make a difference in the world.
We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer – Surgical Simulation that will be working on the Simulation Platform that enables VR robotic simulation of surgical procedures and relevant games. These simulators are used by surgeons around the world to improve their robotic surgical skills.
The successful candidate will effectively apply their passion, discipline, knowledge and hands-on skills of scalable application development and deployment in both an embedded and cloud environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop the UI application that enables surgeons to navigate the simulated training experience for the daVinci robotic systems. The UI is an Electron-based application coded in JavaScript, ReactJS, and Typescript.
- Collaborate with other members of the Simulation team to develop a deep understanding of both the internal workings of the simulator architecture as well as the learning objectives for surgeons wanting to optimize their technical skills training.
- Prototype, design and implement software for an embedded system using primarily C++ and C. Platforms include Windows, Linux, and various real-time systems.
- Support Embedded Windows applications that enable command, control and high-speed streaming data between the surgeon console and the Unity applications that provide VR simulation.
- Collaborate with both internal and external partners to design, implement, and document APIs for use across simulated platforms.
- Work with system engineers to add support for advanced instruments in simulation.
- Collaborate with simulation content developers and console-side system engineers to accurately represent robotic surgical performance and fidelity.
- Work with Quality Assurance to enable automated testing of our software modules.
Qualifications
- Bachelors in computer science, Masters degree preferred
- 5+ years of experience in both front-end and back-end web development, preferably in an embedded environment using JavaScript, ReactJS and TypeScript
- 5+ years of experience in an embedded software role using C, C++, OOP
- Experience with SCM systems (git preferred), branching strategies, pull requests, git workflows, etc.
- Experience with continuous integration systems such as Jenkins
- Strong communication and team-success oriented collaboration skills
- Disciplined debugging skills and tenacious problem solver
- Software development processes including design, documentation and issue tracking (JIRA)
- Familiarity with Agile software development
Bonus Characteristics
- Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell
- Knowledge of AWS Services and Container technologies like Docker
- Creative problem solver Experience with robotics/kinematics
- Unity experience
- Experience with MATLAB

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.
Base Salary Range Region 1:$172,200 - $247,800
Base Salary Range Region 2: $146,400 - $210,600
