Job description

Job Summary The SR Polysom Technologist performs routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures and portable sleep testing on Hospital inpatients and outpatients of various ages and is responsible for the scoring of polysomnographic and portable sleep testing records, Including Home Sleep Testing. The assignment of daily tasks and overview of the technical quality of studies is done by the Neurodiagnostic Services Supervisor and the Medical Directors. The general overall supervision of the laboratory is under the Neurodiagnostic Services Director.
The SR Polysom Tech is responsible for sustaining an environment of intrinsic good will for the practice while providing optimum services to patients. This position performs specific front office functions for the department/clinical team for which it is assigned and may provide back up-front office support.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be CA State licensed as a Polysomnography Technologist
  • Must be a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (R.PSG. T.) administered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
  • American Heart Association (AHA) CPR Certification or UCDH-issued CPR Certification
  • Must have a complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply practice, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Must be proficient in all aspects of polysomnographic recordings, including routine and complex recordings, CPAP/ BiPAP titrations, PES MSLT, NPT, HST and Portable Sleep Testing recordings.
  • Must have the ability to measure and accurately apply disc electrodes to those predetermined areas utilizing knowledge of the International 10/20 system.
  • Must have the knowledge of electrode placement to accurately monitor physiological artifacts and apply additional electrodes. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in area of expertise to ensure provision of the highest quality patient care services.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the laboratory's practices and protocols related to performing polysomnographic procedures and appropriate equipment use.
  • Must be proficient in scoring polysomnographic records according to AASM criteria and Laboratory guidelines.
  • Must be competent with using computerized polysomnography equipment.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the current database to accurately maintain the clinical database and archive digital studies to storage media.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact with tact and diplomacy with hospital and clinic patients, physicians, and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to engage in collaborative problem solving with coworkers and staff.
  • Must have the ability to function as a "team player," being considerate and flexible, taking the needs of your peers into consideration. Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful hospital, clinic, or laboratory environment always exists.
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed.
  • Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Organizes and prioritizes assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignments.
  • Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures.
  • Written and oral communication skills to provide information clearly and concisely, explanations. and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or for whom English may be a second language.
  • Help patients to feel comfortable by introducing self; calling patients by their name (using Mr., Mrs., Miss., or Ms., as appropriate); respecting patients' autonomy and dignity, knocking before entering exam room, and remaining patient and courteous at air times.
  • Provide explanations (within scope of practice) to patients about upcoming exams and procedures, using terminology and phrasing which is responsive to and appropriate for patient's age, language skills, and emotional stale.
  • Anticipate patients' needs and, within scope or practice and authority, take initiative to meet those needs, keep patients informed about actions to be taken.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve problems; create viable solution and take the action necessary to implement them; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Decision making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
  • Knowledge of medical records sufficient to establish and maintain filing system which meet the accessibility and storage needs of the laboratory, and which comply with all pertinent laws, regulations, and HIPPA guidelines regarding confidentiality, maintenance, and provision 10 others.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology to accurately transcribe physician's orders.
  • Working knowledge of departmental and system policies and procedures.
  • Ability to efficiently use computer system to retrieve pertinent patient information through the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Ability to efficiently use computer systems and maintain clinical database.
  • Filing skills to maintain logs and files of information in alphabetical, chronological, and/ or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable.

Department Description
The Sleep Disorders laboratory is part of the UCDMC Sleep Disorders Center, an American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited facility. The Laboratory is managed jointly by the Co-Medical Directors and the Practice Director.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Outpatient center at Midtown and Acute Care hospital settings
  • Must have the stamina to participate with heavy workloads and remain alert throughout lengthy (12-13 hours) night shift duty scheduled on consecutive nights
  • Must be able, on an as-needed basis to adhere to flexible work hours (day and night shifts) or rotating shifts, given reasonable notice.
  • Frequently required to stand for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear
  • Occasionally required to walk; sit; and sloop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must regularly lift and/ or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
