Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Ground Support Engineering (GSE) Test

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. This role will be be to conceive, design, analyze, execute, and commission custom test equipment and for both satellite development and production.
Key job responsibilities
- Work with vehicle, manufacturing, integration and operation teams to define and conceive creative solutions to unique problems.
- Define requirements and design fixtures, mechanisms, and other types of hardware to support safe, efficient, and reliable testing of satellite components.
- Utilize engineering fundamentals to validate the design including hand-calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
- Geometric design using 3D CAD (NX) for parts and assemblies and 2D engineering drawings to communicate design intent.
- Project manage execution of design including budgeting, scheduling and working with manufacturing teams and vendors.
- Work directly with manufacturing and operation teams on commissioning designs on production floor.
- Mentor juniors engineers

About the team
The Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Test team is responsible for designing and commissioning test systems for satellite development and production. This is a team of engineers and support technicians that provide in-house unique and creative solutions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- 6+ years of experience with CAD Design of complex systems including 3D modeling, drawings, and GD&T
- 3+ years of experience of structural analysis including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis
- 3+ years in development or production related testing
- 3+ years of experience with project management, schedule, and budgeting
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong background in the design of mechanism, bolted and welded structures, test fixtures, and tooling in a project-based environment.
- Hardware ownership for full lifecycle of a project.
- Strong experience defining test requirements and executing development/production tests including data post-processing and drawing conclusions from data.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Strong experience with sensors and DAQ systems (load cells, strain gauges, deflection gauges, encoders, motors, thermocouples, and accelerometers)
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials used in assembly tooling and rapid prototyping.
- Experience designing test fixtures for aerospace hardware (TVAC, thermal, vibe, shock).
- Experience with Siemens NX 3D modeling package
- Basic knowledge of industrial electrical, control, and instrumentation systems.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $114,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market.
