Job Summary
Responsible in supporting the Advanced Projects Laboratory (APL) with the use of Holomedicine 3D visualization and advanced 3D printing of operable and dissectible models to support clinicians in planning complex operations, optimizing patient outcomes, and advancing medical education. Accountable for launching new projects and managing the daily operations of APL and personnel (engineers, interns, students, etc.). Directly interacts with Physicians and others requesting lab expertise.
Job Specific Duties
  • Manages the day-to-day biomedical engineering research support for clinical departments under the supervision of the clinical leadership for the 3D program and other appropriate clinicians.
  • Develops and maintains the clinical workflow for Advanced Projects Laboratory.
  • Liaises with vendors to co-develop technologies focusing on pediatric innovations at NCHS.
  • Works with clinicians, vendors, and marketing department to produce press releases and interviews relevant to program.
  • Develops the business model for patient-specific 3D printed and virtual models.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining the database of patient outcomes associated with the 3D printing program.
  • Represents the 3D program by attending and presenting at regional and national conferences for NCHS.
  • Mentors engineering teams and other trainees as needed.
  • Works with leaders and 3D clinical leadership to develop and oversee the budget and finances of the Advanced Project Lab Program.
  • Works with vendors and NCHS stakeholders (Construction, IT, Facilities, etc.) to build out and manage the Advanced Project Laboratory facility within OSHA and other relevant requirements.
  • Liaises with all corporate and academic colleagues on Advanced Project Lab research projects.
  • Assists in development of research protocols including writing drafts, conducting literature reviews, and reporting results to internal and external collaborators.
  • Follows all NCHS policies and procedures in the conduct of human subject research as directed by investigators and the Leaders.
  • Prepares applications, manuscripts, presentations, abstracts, and reports (including data analysis) for funding applications, press, and scientific publication.
  • Utilizes engineering training and expertise to develop and improve devices for medical/surgical intervention, interfaces, and data collection.

Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Master's Degree Engineering degree in computer science, mechanical engineering or biomedical engineer (Required
  • 4-7 years of experience with 3D printing for healthcare and xR Mixed Reality
  • 1-3 years of experience in writing complex technical documents including policy and procedure to meet FDA or other regulatory guidelines
  • 1-3 years of project management experience
  • Significant relevant experience in Biomedical Engineering research as evidenced in publications in peer reviewed journals and/or recommendation letters
  • Prior work experience with medical technology start-ups to drive innovation
  • Experience in implementing and operating augmented reality systems using the Microsoft Hololens platform
  • Experience with structured light 3D scanning of human subjects
  • Experience of advanced simulation techniques including but not limited to Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience in presenting at national meetings including creating multimedia presentations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • CITI group 1, CITI group 4, and CITI Conflict of interest certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated grant writing ability; able to obtain extramural funding preferred.
  • Clinical or hospital based setting experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD-CAM based applications and their utilization in medicine.
  • Able to work successful with interdisciplinary teams to achieve mutual goals.
  • Ability to recruit and mentor entry level biomedical engineers, trainees, and other research scientists.
  • Able to develop and deliver introductory and intermediate level 3D modeling and printing workshops to local engineering students, medical students, and hospital personnel.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to problem solve and adapt to standard clinical procedures.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to incorporate quality improvement with research innovation.
  • Skilled with software and technology development and integration of current and future systems.
  • Ability to contribute and drive content development, standards & quality assurance, and building evidence for the utilization of pre and post-operative 3D printed models, relevant model files, and DICOM.
  • Ability to incorporate images of patient-specific 3D models into PACS.
  • Oversees the management of digital and physical 3D model library.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to transfer technical knowledge to others using a variety of tools and techniques.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with coworkers, potential and actual investigators, and research staff.
  • Ability to set and effectively communicate priorities in a changing environment.
  • Ability to use logical and scientific thinking to interpret technical data and solve a broad range of problems.
  • Ability to scan and print any requested 3D models including complete animate objects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with hospital colleagues, collaborators, vendors, and outside resources.
