The Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Flight Mechanics and Mission Analysis team is responsible for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) Vehicle Management (VM) functions including Guidance, Navigation & Control (GN&C), Mission & Fault Management (M&FM), and Natural Environments. We are currently in search of a Senior Integration Engineer to support SLS in one or more of three areas/elements:  Stages, Payloads, or Exploration Upper Stage (EUS).  A GN&C Element Discipline Lead Engineer (EDLE) ensures the technical accuracy and adequacy of products related to VM.  This exciting work will serve as a critical step in sending humans to the Moon, Mars and beyond!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to support vehicle integration and validation.
  • Ensure that VM technical work is aligned with the vehicle needs.
  • Coordinate and track the status of requirements, analyses, deliveries, and verification/compliance with element prime contractors and VM.
  • Review element deliverables for quality and technical adequacy.
  • Utilized knowledge of multiple disciplines to determine and/or coordinate the analysis or impact of designs and/or changes on VM areas.
  • Participate in program, vehicle, element, and discipline reviews.
  • Support integration, verification, and validation activities.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and briefings.
  • Provide program management functions for VM and external elements/customers.

A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically educational requirements are the equivalent of a PhD with at least 14 years of experience, a Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.  

Required skills/experience:

  • Experience performing design and/or analysis in one or more of the following areas:  guidance, navigation, control systems, or mission/fault management.
  • Ability to understand the relationship between discipline analyses/products and other vehicle systems
  • Proficiency resolving complex integration issues and clearly communicating issues and solutions to stakeholders.
  • Knowledge in several areas such as sensors, thrusters/thrust vector control, avionics, orbital mechanics, dispersion analysis, control systems (phase plane control, stability analysis, filtering), fault management, slosh, flex, mass properties, aerodynamics, propulsion, etc.
  • Ability to apply subsystem knowledge to determine impacts of designs/changes on the vehicle and VM systems.
  • Must be detail oriented and self-motivated that can work independently or collaboratively in a multi-discipline team.
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong program management skills, scheduling, planning, tracking and financials.

Desired skills/experience:

  • Experience with SLS or other NASA programs.
  • Experience integrating aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle systems.
  • Experience in testing environments and requirement development/tracing.
  • Experience in hardware and software integration.
  • Work in the aerospace/defense industry.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple tasks and priorities
  • Proficiency in systems/project engineering.
  • Model based design.

Essential Functions
Work Environment: 
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines: 
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
