SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Senior Engineer shall report to the Manager Engineering, Capital Delivery within the Inspections and Testing group. Assist the Manager Engineering, Capital Delivery with day-to-day operations. Support troubleshooting and perform routine and ad-hoc maintenance of the Wheel Load Impact Detectors (WILDs) as well as other select wayside instrumentation systems.  Perform analysis on site performance and amtrak rolling stock performance. This position will help to innovate and improve reporting and processes as well audit automate alerts. Participate in various railroad projects relevant to the Track Geometry Group. This position will require travel as necessary (up to 50% of the time) and may involve extensive night work and multiple day stays away from headquarters.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Troubleshoot and repair WILDs, including on-track gauges and wayside electronic components. 
• Troubleshoot and repair RailBAM acoustic monitoring site and KLD WheelScanner system.
• Contact vendors and generate purchase orders for spare and replacement parts as needed.
• Collaborate with Mechanical stakeholders regarding rolling stock performance and evaluate quality of alerts generating work orders.
• Perform daily health checks of various wayside systems to ensure site operation and integrity of the data produced
• Remotely monitor systems for failures and be prepared to react via remote troubleshooting or site visit.
• Perform or assist vendors with periodic site calibrations. 
• Analyze wayside system data to drive maintenance and improve quality.
• Collect and analyze wheel and rail profile data as needed for ride quality, system QA/QC, VTI analysis, and derailment analysis.
• Assist Manager Engineering with various project work.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education training and/or 5 years of relevant work experience. 
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize engineering assignments and projects
• Must be proactive and capable of performing tasks both independently and within groups.
• Experience in using PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) sufficient to prepare effective analysis and presentations.
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong Safety Focus.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with strain gauges and/or troubleshooting electrical systems.
• Roadway Worker Protection (RWP)
• NORAC
• AMT-2
• MW1000

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The salary/hourly range is $103,700 - $134,460 for the Sr Engineer position. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
