The Senior Data Analytics Specialist works in the office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) at the Ohio State University. IRP provides accurate, timely, consistent, and actionable data and integrates analytics across multiple domains (student, faculty, human resources, fiscal, research, facilities, and more) to support evidence-based decision making at The Ohio State University. IRP provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction in building a data-informed decision culture at The Ohio State University by championing and collaborating with campus stakeholders in broadening data sharing, data governance, actionable insight development, operational effectiveness, and professional skill development. We engage in institutional research, official reporting, institutional effectiveness activities, data visualization, survey research, assessment and accreditation data support, mixed-methods research, and advanced analytics to enhance the success and learning of our students as well as overall university and operational effectiveness. We also promote culturally responsive and inclusive institutional analytics and assessment practices that consider the increasingly diverse student, faculty, and staff populations we serve.
The Senior Data Analytics Specialist reports to the Director of Institutional Research and Reporting and conducts data analysis and research to solve problems and provide actionable insights for university decision-making in the areas including but are not limited to student enrollment and success outcomes, faculty analytics, institutional performance benchmarking, academic program evaluation and planning, financial analysis, or performance evaluation or process improvement. Integrates diverse data sources from across the University using python and SQL for use in executive-level reporting and analyses. Designs, builds, and deploys data visualizations and analytics for Executive leadership, Board of Trustees, Deans, Department Chairs, and decision makers across OSU. Develops multiple datasets, unifying data from diverse sources and domains.
The Senior Data Analytics Specialist designs, builds, delivers, and manages reports, analyses, and data dashboards in support of strategic university goals and the Academic Plan.
  • Extracts and models data necessary for advanced analytics, reporting, and visualizations
  • Translates large amounts of data into interactive graphical representations
  • Provides ad hoc reporting and analysis
  • Identifies data element requirements from users and stakeholders
  • Documents data sources and definitions
  • Reduces users need to manually generate their own analyses

The Senior Data Analytics and Visualization Specialist is an enterprise-wide support role, and the work involves the application of statistics and computer science fundamentals along with modern data visualization concepts to identify, collect, integrate data assets from other disparate data sources, analyze and present as needed to address projects for organizational needs and priorities. The ideal candidate should:
  • Be comfortable in iterative engagement
  • Discuss findings and recommendations from data sets with stakeholders
  • Guide and educate best practices for building dashboards
  • Uphold data security and confidentiality
  • Generate real-time analytics
  • Understand how to reduce bias in reporting and apply an equity-centered lens to data reporting and analytics
  • Collaborate with the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation to create and maintain reports and data sources
  • Apply statistical analysis and visualization techniques to identify data trends and relationships

Duties Description
30% Functions as a Data Analytics leader to plan the design of large, complex and key Data Analytics programs and projects to support and enhance the mission and strategic objectives of the Ohio State University, particularly in the areas of research, innovation, and academic planning; manages the initiation, planning, execution and closing phases of projects involving the integration of multiple data sources, utilization of multiple systems, and collaborative efforts across business unit functions. Define analytics project scope, required resources, and completion timelines. Identifies assumptions and data elements to be used in analysis. Identifies desired outcomes
20% Defines Data Analytics needs and requirements to the organization and customers. Identifies and collects appropriate data elements necessary for responding to questions/issues; identifies sources of required data and provides appropriate definitions of data to be used in the analysis. Conduct data mining and discoveries across different data platforms and sources to identify strategies and solutions to decision support issues or problems; oversees the development of Data Analytics solutions and systems.
30% Works collaboratively with other Data Analytics professionals to plan and executive large and complex Data Analytics projects. Provides leadership in process management, technical knowledge, and research methods in analytics projects. Applies technical skills and best practices to manage database applications and data assets. Implement selected methodology to develop analysis results such as historic trends, current position, projected position or impact on resource requirements. Performs comparisons against identified standards, targets, and/or strategic plans. Generates reports of results for use by internal and external customers. Analyzes workflow, identifying logistical and/or operational issues to target for improvement.
20% Identifies and/or develops appropriate tools (databases, spreadsheets, statistical procedures, etc.) required to conduct analysis. Defines new iterations of analysis, identifying new data elements to be incorporated based on previous outcomes. Restructures projects according to previous outcomes. Identifies and resolves issues affecting analysis that need further development or resolution prior to completion of project.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, MIS, Statistics, Business, Economics) or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years of experience in extraction, data reporting, and data analyses and visualization (in Tableau or other data visualization platforms). Demonstrated ability to extract data from several datasets and sources. Demonstrated experience creating insights with visualization platforms/dashboards using large data sets, preferably in higher education setting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience and knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, R or Python required. Experience using relevant business intelligence and statistical analysis software packages strongly preferred
Additional Information:
Proposed salary range: $73,100-$97,500
