About this role
Carrier’s software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how Carrier products connect and interact with information and one another. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, and user experience; the list goes on and is growing every day. As an Engineering Manager, you will work on a specific product critical to Carrier’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and products as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our Engineering Managers to be versatile, display leadership qualities, and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full stack as we continue to push technology forward.
This role reports to the Associate Director of Software Engineering for a specific Carrier product. This role has as direct reports the individual development team leads. The role is paired with one or more Product Managers, who are responsible for developing the overall product vision and ideating, researching, defining, prioritizing, and documenting product requirements and designs at the feature level. The product team jointly is responsible for the product roadmap, release planning, feature definition, and strong customer advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Single-threaded ownership of the state of delivery across your teams. You know and report on what’s on track, what’s on fire, and escalate when plan and reality diverge.
- Set a bold vision for a high-performing software delivery lifecycle (SDLC) and influence leaders in your team to define and improve key performance indicators (KPIs) to meet that vision.
- Build and maintain a fail-fast culture that learns from mistakes to continuously improve reliability of operated software products.
- Meet regularly with development team members to review performance, progress on individual goals, provide feedback and coaching. Set clear expectations with development team members based on their level and role aligned to the broader organization's goals.
- Manage pipeline of resources to be hired. Scope and deliver candidate interviews.
- Coach and grow development team members to the next stages of their careers.
- Review code as needed and provide feedback to ensure adoption of the best practices of software delivery are being met such as code legibility, quality, testability, and efficiency.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of 10 years delivering production software in one or more roles and levels
- Minimum of 5 years delivering software products using Agile methodologies
- Minimum of 3 years shipping solutions using cloud computing methodologies and vendors such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
- Minimum of 3 years delivering software using service-oriented, micro-service, or serverless architectures.
- Minimum of 1 year leading a globally distributed team
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in computer science or computer engineering
- Active or expired professional certification for project management such as PMP, Scrum, or Agile
- Active or expired professional certification for cloud architecture such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate
- Use of Atlassian products (JIRA/Confluence/Bitbucket) for definition, tracking, and delivery of software projects
- Previous experience as a software developer shipping web applications as a senior developer or team lead
- Previous experience delivering software projects in the domain of Internet of Things (IoT) or industrial edge
- Detail oriented – you can see the big picture and break it down into small, digestible chunks
- Passion for and understanding of technology – working knowledge of modern, cloud-based technology. Distributed computing expertise is a bonus
- Great communication – you can help product owners translate requirements and designs into clear user stories, and communicate across product and technical teams to ensure requirements are understood and actionable
- Business acumen – desire to understand how each new feature delights customers and impacts the business
- Proven record of successfully delivering software with remote and globally distributed teams
