VRE is the place to be! We are seeking a solid accounting professional with Accounts Payable (AP) and general accounting experience to join our Finance & Accounting team as a Sr. Associate Accountant. This position reviews and processes invoices, expense claims, and other payments using our Tyler ERP system; educates and advises others on A/P practices and requirements; researches issues and discrepancies; prepares/mails checks and processes electronic fund transfers; uploads ACH and positive pay files; maintains A/P registers; and prepares and posts journal entries and cash receipts. Other duties include setting up periodic bank wires, reconciling balance sheet accounts, preparing audit requests, and vendor management and outreach. Position is based at our headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, with opportunity for some weekly remote work.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Minimum
- Demonstrated success performing job duties and responsibilities directly related to those of position to include all steps and tasks related to accounts payable processing and other accounting-related duties and responsibilities.
- Experience effectively using technology, systems, and tools to include Microsoft Office and ERP systems such as Tyler Enterprise ERP.
Preferred
- Associate or Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree from an accredited college or university
- Public sector/Enterprise fund governmental accounting experience
Additional Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and always maintain a safe driving record during employment with VRE
- Ability to work the flexible hours demanded by a transit operation environment
Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time position with benefits. Starting salary from $75,500.46 dependent on experience & credentials of successful candidate. Benefits include:

About VRE
The Virginia Railway Express (VRE), a joint project of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, provides safe, cost effective, accessible, reliable, convenient, and comfortable commuter-oriented rail passenger service. VRE operates thirty-two trains each weekday on two lines, Fredericksburg and Manassas, which converge in Alexandria and continue into the District of Columbia. Most trains run north in the morning and south in the afternoon/evening.
VRE directly serves nine cities and counties in Central and Northern Virginia, with nineteen total stations in the rail system. VRE contributes to the economic development of its member jurisdictions and is an integral part of a balanced, intermodal regional transportation system.
