Job description

Johns Hopkins University has a $6 billion annual operating budget in addition to a $300 million annual capital budget. The University is made up of nine academic divisions, Sheridan Libraries, the Applied Physics Laboratory and several independent institutes.
The University Administration Business Office reports to the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer which works collaboratively across the University to support high-level financial plans and strategic planning issues and initiatives. The University Administration Business Office oversees financial planning, analysis, and reporting for the university's central administration business units.
University Administration (UA) supports the teaching, research and clinical mission of the University and its divisions by providing common administrative infrastructure and services; identifying and addressing shared challenges; and facilitating collaboration across the University and Johns Hopkins Health System. UA has an annual operating budget of more than $300 million from all funds, includes approximately 25 offices and departments, and has more than 1,600 full-time employees.
We are seeking a Sr. Accountantwho will report to the Senior Financial Manager for the University Administration Business Office. This person will perform routine and complex accounting activities for the central University Administration office, requiring knowledge of systems, independent judgment and an ability to respond accordingly. In addition, this will require close collaboration with all the departments within University Administration as well as University divisions to ensure consistency and accuracy across the entire division. S/he oversees activities on various accounts, analyzes past and current data and prepares expense projections and operational forecasts. Finally, this person will not only have accounting responsibilities but will also assist with all aspect of the financial analysis and planning in collaboration with the rest of the UA finance team.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Calculate and maintain an administrative cost allocation for the University and the JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).
  • Administer the cost allocation through collaboration with UA departments and APL.
  • Review actual transactions in University Administration to determine allowable costs used in calculating the cost allocation.
  • Prepare schedules to ensure proper administrative cost allocation for leadership, APL, APL auditors, and APL funding agencies.
  • Serve as the lead in responding to audit requests as needed from APL.
  • Perform monthly and quarterly journal entries for UA business areas including accruals, prepayments, deferred payment, transfers, capital projects, allocations, etc.
  • Prepare reconciliations of various general ledger accounts and SAP financial modules.
  • Become an SAP system expert and maintain hierarchy in SAP, including review of new cost center and account requests for proper set-up and classification.
  • Prepare and analyze complex accounting transactions to ensure proper GAAP treatment which may require research of technical accounting literature.
  • Execute various reports using the SAP Analysis reporting tool from various reporting modules: Special Ledger, Funds Management, Controlling, Fixed Assets, etc.
  • Assist in the development of the five-year budget plan and quarterly budget projections.
  • Assist in the quarterly and year-end closing process for the UA division by utilizing both standard system reports and custom internal reports to thoroughly analyze results and identify variances.
  • Assist in the preparation of the quarterly and annual finance packet for executive leadership.
  • Other ad hoc request as deemed necessary from management.
  • Work UA departments to ensure preparation, transaction processing and results are in compliance with GAAP.
  • Prepare schedules to project budget and quarterly financial results.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related work experience. If bachelor's degree is in unrelated field, four years of progressively responsible experience is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related work experience. If bachelor's degree is in unrelated field, four years of progressively responsible work experience is required.
  • Auditing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Johns Hopkins University and SAP experience highly desirable.

Starting Salary Range: Min $61,070- Max $106,710 (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
