Position Overview
This internship allows students to perform a variety of tasks including supporting essential advocacy and communications at CGLA. In addition to filling the void of legal representation for hundreds of individuals each year, CGLA also works for systemic changes needed to remove the barriers created by the criminal legal system. This position will help our Policy and Advocacy team develop tools to support our policy objectives, use social media and other public-facing tools to message our work and promote narrative change around our issues, and create other resources needed to ensure continued support of our work. The Intern working with CGLA will gain hands-on experience in working across teams, project management, message generation, and other skills from a longtime social justice organization with deep roots in Chicago.
Essential Duties
Policy & Advocacy:
- Provide administrative support/coordination to our community organizing and advocacy
campaigns. - Analyze relevant legislation.
- Research policy and history related to CGLA’s advocacy agenda.
- Develop and update advocacy materials and resources.
- Track/support media outreach and appearances.
External Relations
- Support communications and meeting coordination.
- Assist in maintenance of social media platforms, i.e. Facebook, Instagram & Twitter.
- Provide analytics of social media/website usage.
- Draft communications materials.
Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and disrupting the systemic racism perpetuated
by our criminal legal system. - At least one year of undergraduate studies completed.
Required Skills
- Excellent writing skills (writing samples, including those for social media, will be requested);
access to laptop and high-speed internet for working off site; - Strong organizational skills and ability to stay on top of several projects at one time;
- Working knowledge of MS Office required and experience with databases, Mail Chimp, and
InDesign will be a plus. - Presentation and/or design skills are a plus.
Supervisory Responsibility
None.
Required Hours
10 hours per week during our normal office hours of - Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
