PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Hiring Rate: $18/hour
**This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Sports Program Assistants. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and qualifications match the needs of the position. **
This is classified as a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), this position do not provide medical benefits. The position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
The City of Aurora is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for a position in the Recreation Division. The Sports Program Assistant manages the day-to-day operations of the multiple youth and adult Sports Programs within the division while ensuring quality customer service. This position reports to the Recreation Specialist.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Timely initiation of all activities, games, programs to which they have been assigned. Including last-minute details regarding the set-up of facilities.
  • Adherence to all schedules provided by Sports Staff. Including but not limited to; referees, officials, community service, game time, practice time, forfeit time.
  • Responsible for decisions regarding crowd control, inclement weather, darkness, lightning.
  • Answer and interpret all questions/problems regarding rules and regulations during any athletic event.
  • Maintain accurate records for the following: community service individuals, league standings (when applicable), other part-time staff under their supervision.
  • May be called upon to officiate any or all games when necessary.
  • Will have general knowledge of assigned sport including rules and regulations.
  • Will understand how the game is played including the principles, practice, and techniques used in recreational sporting events.
  • Has the ability to handle participants, team managers, and/or coaches under difficult game situations.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees, various community organizations, and the public.
  • Responsibilities will include supervision and coordination of leagues, coaches, and fields; training, scheduling, and supervising umpires; inputting registrations and forming teams, evaluating umpires, checking fields, field preparation, conflict resolution, and providing customer service for coaches, parents, and team players.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Age: At least 16 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED (or on track to complete).
  • Working knowledge of sports and how games are played, officiated, and managed. Ability to regulate crowd, coach, participant, officials/referee behavior. Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public and to handle stressful situations in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Equivalent training and experience that will demonstrate required knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Skills:
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Abilities:
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens, and private organizations.
  • The ability to respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • The ability to handle sensitive and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and implement needed organizational systems.

Required Licenses:
  • A Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • You will have the opportunity to occasionally use your own personal equipment (i.e. Vehicle, cellphone, laptop, tools, etc.) during the course of your employment.

Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary to moderate physical work depending upon assignment. May require the ability to lift up to a maximum of 75 pounds. May require regular standing and walking. May require bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer keyboard. May require foot/eye coordination for the operation of a motor vehicle. Vision to read reports and other written material. Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk orhear. Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by theCity, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office or moderately loud when in the field.

Equipment Used:
  • Uses standard office equipment including a computer system. Requires operation of own motor vehicle. Personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; cell phone; a mobile or portable radio; automobile; various sports equipment used in recreation programs.
