ORIENTATION AND TESTING

Orientation will be held the week of January 8, 2024, applicants invited to attend will be notified via email. A written exam will be administered as part of the application screening process. Applicants who score a passing score of 70% will move onto the oral exam.

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, Sports Officials use a full range of technical skills to officiate and manage a wide variety of sports and athletic events for Adult and Youth Sports leagues and tournaments for the Recreation and Community Services Department; enforce game and facility rules; and provides support to the Department.
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Possess technical and detailed knowledge of game rules and officiating mechanics and techniques; understand, interpret and enforce all game rules and program policies pertaining to game play; maintain a safe and secure environment for all participants and spectators; prevent, mediate, and resolve protests and conflicts that may arise during sporting events; ensure proper completion of scoring documents and provide written reports on all incidents, protests, ejections, etc.; possess strong assessment, communication, and diplomacy skills; ensure sportsmanship of all participants and spectators; attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings; position may also require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the position may also require both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment; the need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required; the incumbent in this indoor/outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold; the incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, and the incumbents may be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards; the nature of the work requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and often work with constant interruptions; performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
The candidate must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
One or more years of SCMAF officiating experience desired. Experience officiating sports and/or related work/volunteer service in sports is preferred.

SCMAF Officials Certification desired.
Requirements:
  • Valid Class "C" California driver's license.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications are required within 60 days of hire.
  • Department administered certification test and on-court/field practical.
  • Travel to locations throughout the city may be required.
  • Required to work evenings and weekends as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • Standard and currently accepted rules of play for the assigned sport.
  • Officiating techniques and dispute resolution.
  • Score keeping methods.
  • Basic arithmetic principles and practices.

Ability to:
  • Officiate games and events in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Apply standards and accepted rules of play to particular sports.
  • Resolve disputes and maintain control of games.
  • Prepare written records of game scores and report game wins and losses.
  • Follow and promote safe work practices.
  • Communicate effectively with players, spectators, and staff.
  • Work in diverse environments.
  • Move about the field/court and stand for long periods of time.
