Sports Audience Editor
Hybrid-Based position
The Oregonian/OregonLive in Portland is looking for a Sports Audience Editor with a track record of growing readership, producing engaging content and experimenting with emerging platforms. Our talented, award-winning and collaborative Sports team is up for anything, and we're looking for someone with that same kind of energy and enthusiasm.
This position gives the opportunity to do it all, including planning coverage, overseeing reporters, producing podcasts and working on social media strategy. We want to be where our audience is, and you will be expected to help us be there in smart, forward-thinking ways. We are looking for someone who enjoys variety, is skilled at juggling multiple projects, thrives in a fast-paced environment and is game for anything. The Sports Audience Editor works closely with and reports to the Sports Editor.
What you'll do:
  • Plan coverage, identify trending stories, and manage reporters
  • Collaborateclosely with oursocial media and visuals team to use best practices to grow audience and engagement for Sports content
  • Produce Sports podcasts
  • Stay abreast of trends in media to find audiences on emerging platforms
  • Create and promote content to suit platform needs (newsletters, direct texting, audio, etc.)

The ideal candidate has:
  • 5-8 years of experience and/or a college degree in Journalism or similar field
  • Solid news judgment and journalistic ethics
    • Strong headline writing, line-editing andcopy-editingskills
    • Experience managing others and/or managing projects
  • Experience responding in breaking news situations
  • Ability to collaborate on projects and across departments
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, from conception to publication
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Understanding of metrics and how to leverage platforms to reach maximum engagement
  • Familiarity with best practices in newsletters, podcasting and social media
  • Familiarity with the Oregon sports landscape
  • Ability to work with freelancers on stories and photo assignments
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends

Bonus, but not required:
  • Photography experience
  • Video production experience
  • Podcast production experience
  • Spanish-language fluency
