Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for assuring the best possible quality of professional
care based on the most recent clinical and research findings. This requires periodic reevaluation
of clinical procedures and equipment in terms of their appropriations in the program.
Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for screening, evaluating, and providing written
assessment or consultation for residents with oral/pharyngeal swallowing disorders.
Assessments should include recommendations for diet texture modifications for both solid food
and liquids, swallowing strategies and feeding techniques that reduce or minimize risk of
aspiration and maximize meal consumption. The Speech Language Pathologist provides staff
and family education to address individual resident diet needs, strategies and feed techniques.
The Speech Language Pathologist confers with the Registered Dietitian as needed in regards to
individual diet texture medication recommendations, quality of food consistencies provided and
clinical observations or findings that may impact the resident’s nutritional status.
Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for providing diagnostic, evaluative, therapeutic,
educational, and counseling services to veterans with mild to profound communication disorders,
and is responsible for counseling and educating the families of the veterans served. The types of
problems treated can include disorders such as aphasia, dementia, dysarthria, apraxia, dysphagia,
voice disorder, etc.
Speech Language Pathologist will implement methods and procedures by which interdisciplinary
attention is given to patients evaluated and treated. It is also the responsibility of the contractor
to promote and understand the goals, policies, clinic procedures and programs through
participation in meetings, committees, and in-service training.
The contractor advises the Medical Director of needs required to maintain quality services
specifically related to staff, equipment and space. The contractor serves as a consultant to the
RIVH Administration about patient management decisions involving patients with
communication disorders.
Administrative duties include the development of policies and procedures and quality
management to maximize the effectiveness of Speech Language Pathology and to acquaint other
programs in the RIVH with the necessary information about services offered.
The contractor represents the Speech Language Pathology Services at various meetings of
progression or administrative nature. There are approximately 1-2 meetings per month, which
will be charged the same as a visit rate. The contractor agrees to do related work as required by
the Administrator/Medical Director.
