GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides therapeutic/intervention services and treats persons with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. May select alternative communication systems and teach their use. May perform research related to speech and language problems. Conducts speech screenings and assessments individually and as part of a full team of evaluators.
Essential Duties

• Assess communication disorders including test interpretation and formal report writing.
• Conduct the entire referral process to determine a student's eligibility for special education services within federal/ state/division procedural guidelines.
• Provide speech/language therapy in accordance with a written educational plan for students with a wide range of physical, emotional, and /or cognitive impairments.
• Develop and/or implement treatment plans for students with stuttering, disordered articulation, disordered language, swallowing disorders, voice problems, or for students who are minimally verbal or non-verbal based on own assessments as well as recommendations of interdisciplinary team members.
• Write reports and maintain proper documentation of information, such as client Medicaid or billing records or caseload activities, including the initial evaluation, treatment, progress, and discharge of clients within federal/state/division guidelines.
• Participate in and write reports for meetings regarding students' progress, such as individualized educational planning (IEP) meetings, in-service meetings, or intervention assistance team meetings.
• Communicate orally and in writing with parents, school personnel, and outside agency professionals.
• Monitor students' progress and adjust therapy accordingly.
• Evaluate hearing, speech and language test results, medical and/or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, or swallowing disorders.
• Document attendance and daily therapy programming.
• Send monthly documentation for Medicaid students to central office.
• Serve as case manager when speech is primary service.
• Assist in transitioning special education therapy students from one educational program to another or from one school to another.
• Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Certification Required; Must hold a current Board of Audiology and Speech/Language Pathology license (School, Provisional, or Full license)
Education and Experience
Education Required: Must meet option one or two as outlined for speech pathologists and hold a current school-based
license or full license under the Virginia Licensure Regulations For School Personnel. Master's Degree required.
Experience Required: Must have a record of successful full-time speech/language therapy experience or have demonstrated
a successful internship. The position requires expertise in the diagnosis and remediation of communication disorders,
expertise in the provision of therapy for students with a wide range of disabilities, and the ability to work with computers, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology. Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Time Off Benefits *

• Paid Holidays - 10- month and 11-month personnel follow the School Calendar. 12-month full-time classified employees receive 13 holidays per year (9 designated days and 4 floating days).
• Vacation - 12-month employees earn 1 day of leave per month for their first four years of service, 1.25 days for 5 - 9 years of service, and 1.5 days for 10 or more years of service.
• Sick Leave - Full-time employees earn one sick leave day per month (10 - 12 depending on length of contract) with unlimited accrual. Part-time employees will earn sick leave on a prorated basis.
• Personal Leave - Full-time employees earn two days per year the first 3 years of service and 3 days per year with 3 or more years of service.

• VRS Retirement - Employees who work more than 5.5 hours per day participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The benefit is 95% paid for by Hanover County Schools.
• VRS Hybrid Retirement Optional Contribution Plan - HCPS offers an additional plan for Hybrid employees who can choose to contribute up to an additional 4% in voluntary contributions to the defined contribution component of the Hybrid Retirement Plan each month, which is matched to a maximum of 2.5% by HCPS.
