Job description

The Heritage Community is currently seeking to hire a full-time SPED Teacher, specifically able to teach the subject of Science. As a private, residential treatment program, majority of our students need the individualized attention and expertise of a SPED endorsed educator! Our full curriculum secondary school is specifically designed to provide small classroom learning environments to enable both Teacher and Student to focus on individual, educational needs. Teachers are expected to work consistently with our Academic Advisors to receive IEP updates, along with any other pertaining therapeutic information needed to successfully educate each student. Schedule:

  • Exempt. Monday - Friday, 8:45 AM - 4:00 PM. Our academic schedule is YEAR-ROUND.

Accountabilities:
  • Teach lesson plans in the subject of Science, specifically Biology and Physical Science courses. May be asked to teach Chemistry and/or Physics if endorsed to do so or as needed.
  • Encourage imagination and originality, by teaching in ways that keep students focused and attentive.
  • Educate students, ages 12 to 18, with various academic levels and special needs.
  • Raise standards of student attainment and achievement, while monitoring and supporting student success.
  • Design lesson plans with clearly defined goals and objectives.
  • Individualize assignments for each student's educational level and needs.
  • Frequently communicate and work with the Academic Advisors to receive updates regarding the IEP or ISP goals for each student assigned to your classroom.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development, and submit grade reports to Academic Advisors.
  • Create a positive, intellectual learning environment in the classroom through supportive relationships with the youth, effective classroom management, and appropriate organization of facilities.
  • Be honest and professional in all dealings - stay on task and use time well at work to benefit students, co-workers, providers, and the company as a whole.
  • Understand and implement principles from the book, The Anatomy of Peace by The Arbinger Institute, and be an example of conflict resolution techniques to enhance a culture of excellence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Education Director.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Secondary Education, or Science.
  • Completed Utah Educator license, with SPED endorsement and Science endorsement.
  • If SPED endorsement is not completed, must be willing and able to work toward receiving endorsement while employed through our affiliated university or as approved by Education Director.
  • Previous teaching experience highly desirable, including special education experience.
  • Good knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disorders, and other psychological disorders.
  • High level aptitude and proficiency working with adolescent population.
  • Engaging, edifying, and empathetic character, to develop healthy, supportive relationships with the students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal-relationship skills.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older to apply.
  • Proficiency and fluency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing English.
