Job Summary
The Specialty Pharmacy Technician assists in the non-discretionary tasks of Outpatient Pharmacy to provide comprehensive Specialty Pharmacy service to CHOC patients. Is responsible for the data entry of required information from the prescription and patient profile in order to process and adjudicate prescriptions; verification of patient eligibility and coverage information; conducting a benefit investigation; obtaining medical records from prescriber offices as required for the completion of prior authorizations; initiating prior authorizations and communicates with third party payers on behalf of the physician and patient; finding and applying manufacturer copay cards and initiating patient assistance and co-pay assistance applications. Will serve as the point of contact for patients, explain benefit coverage and financial responsibilities to the patients, collect method of payment, coordinate medication refills, and delivery of medications.
Pay Range
Minimum $28.33 Midpoint $37.52 Maximum $46.73
Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.
Experience
• Required: Minimum two (2) years of outpatient/ambulatory pharmacy experience.
• Preferred: Over two (2) years of Specialty Pharmacy experience with benefit investigation, delivery scheduling, and patient assistance programs. Experience with insurance prior authorization is a plus.
Education
• Required: High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent. Graduate from an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program.
• Preferred: Associate degree in Arts or Science Education.
Training
• Required: Specialty pharmacy training on patient eligibility, benefits investigation, authorizations and benefits coverage.
Specialized Skills
• Required: Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Windows systems. Ability to manage multiple tasks. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision, as well as in a team setting. Ability to prioritize and meet required deadlines. Ability to accept and participate in change. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to set goals and judge results in accordance with the highest standard.
• Preferred: Bilingual - English/Spanish.
Licensure
• Required: California Pharmacy Technician license; Pharmacy Technician Board Certification (CPhT).
Work Environments - Functional Demand:
