Educational and Experience Requirement:Bachelor’s degree in related field. Three years of experience in Academic Advising , Admissions or experience in a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position:Serves as academic advisor to School of Nursing (SON) students, leads in SON admissions, and helps design and support programs designed to promote recruitment, progression, and alumni engagement.
Primary Responsibilities:Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding academic programs and curriculum through student-centered and positive engagement. Maintains and updates student files. Guides and directs students to academic and other support resources. Aids students in understanding retention, progression, and remediation policies and processes. Assists with student recruitment, orientation, and career planning. Analyzes and processes degree plans. Continuously improves the advising role and related processes at the School of Nursing (SON). Collaborates with College of Health Sciences (COHS) and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC) to promote the brand and community awareness of the SON. Builds and promotes the SHSU SON alumni network. Assists the Clinical Coordinator with processing clinical placements. Leads in admissions by overseeing 3rd-party digital supports (e.g. Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education), application review and screening, application evaluation and ranking, admission offers, and student orientation and onboarding. Leads collaborative efforts among SON faculty and staff to support and improve SON admissions. Supports the SON Accreditation Specialist in regulatory and accreditation duties. Positively engages students for their success and wellness. Coordinates with SON Academic Coach to design and implement programs focused on holistic student wellness. Contributes to holistic student support by acting as a liaison for the student and student support services at SHSU. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:Requires detailed knowledge of university infrastructure, policies and procedures. Requires knowledge of State of Texas terms and conditions, clauses required for contracts. Requires knowledge of office systems. Must have the ability to solve operational problems and make suggestions for process improvement. Must have independent judgement and be confident in providing completed staff work to supervisors. Must be confident working with Texas State University System legal team in review of contracts. Ability to effectively provide oral and written communication to suppliers and campus users to negotiate contract terms and conditions is a must. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word for compilation of documents, editing and track changes.
This position is located at The Woodlands Center.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
