QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college
Valid South Carolina teaching certificate that meets Highly Qualified requirements as defined by the ESEA legislation
Documented successful teaching experience with students that have deafness or hearing impairments
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of assistive technology for students with deafness or hearing impairments
PREFERRED SKILL: Demonstrated proficiency in the use of American Sign Language
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
JOB GOAL: To provide quality educational and sign language services for students with hearing impairments and/or deafness.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instructs individuals who have been identified, assessed and diagnosed as having hearing impairments that have an adverse effect on learning.
- In collaboration with team members, writes IEPs with appropriate present levels, goals, accommodations, and services for students with hearing impairments. Collaborates with and guides sign language interpreters in order to meet student needs.
- Develops and provides a wide variety of activities and tasks in order to meet lesson and program objectives. Adapts the curriculum as needed to meet students' needs.
- Utilizes texts, materials, supplies, and equipment necessary in carrying out educational programs for the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing students.
- Understands and utilizes appropriate evaluation instruments and progress monitors skills.
- Is responsive to the needs and concerns of parents and encourages their participation in their child's program.
- Works cooperatively with faculty members and the district office.
- Attends staff meetings as needed.
- Participates in professional development programs and contributes to re-evaluation and other assessments, as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 days. Teacher salary schedule as determined by the
salary schedule established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated yearly by the
Director of Special Education.
