Summary:
The Special Education Teacher will provide specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
The Special Education Teacher shall have duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to the following:
Develop and implement an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student on his/her caseload.
Instruct using district curriculum.
Provide direct instruction and supervision to students within the school and community.
Administer MI-Access/alternative assessments.
Utilize instructional technology as available.
Progress monitor and adjust instruction accordingly.
Utilize a variety of evidence based teaching strategies.
Implement building wide positive behavior management (PBIS).
Participate in Functional Behavior Assessments and implement Behavior Intervention Plans as required.
Create a positive learning environment for students.
Participate in the implementation of health care procedures.
Collaborate effectively with ancillary staff.
Supervise, coach and support paraprofessionals. Participate in paraprofessional evaluations as appropriate.
Support personal care (i.e. toileting, administration of medicine, feeding, assist with mobility, etc.) of students.
Actively participate in school wide events.
Drive to and from community based instruction sites.
Develop positive relationships with students, families and colleagues.
Participate in staff meetings, inservices, and committees as appropriate.
Maintain accurate attendance and records.
Meet deadlines for data, reports and paperwork as directed.
Ability to work independently.
Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance. Presence on the job is an employee's fundamental obligation.

While performing the duties of this job, the Special Education Teacher must be able to do the following:
May be required to grasp, push, reach, or stoop/kneel/crouch.
The employee must be sufficiently mobile to to effectively supervise and assist with students, including ability to escort or restrain students as needed/when trained.
The employee is required to be computer literate and to have the energy to deal with multiple demands.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
The employee will normally work indoors but may be required to be outdoors in unpredictable temperatures to monitor/work with students.
May occasionally be required to lift up to 20 pounds, rarely up to 50 pounds.
Occasionally required to drive to other locations.
Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movements to work on computer and/or related office equipment.
Remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace through their employment in the district.

The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school or outside, where noise level may vary.
Qualifications:
Have a valid Michigan teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement in Cognitive Impairment (CI) or willingness to obtain CI endorsement.
Valid Michigan driver's license.
Pass background check.
Salary Range: The salary will be commensurate with education and demonstrated experience of the successful candidate to fulfill the requirements of the position as determined by administration.
